Andy Bray announced his arrival on the Bermuda tennis scene when he scored a come-from-behind victory over Island number one Jenson Bascome in the final of the Heineken Open at the weekend.

Bray, recently arrived from the UK, lost the first set at the Tennis Stadium 6-4, but rallied to take the next two, 6-3, 6-4.

The Brit used his powerful serve and net game to see off Bascome, who recently represented the Island in the Davis Cup and played in the qualifying rounds of the XL Capital Bermuda Open.

Bascome played well in the first set, with Bray making numerous unforced errors. However, Bray settled down in the second and it was Bascome who was the more nervous of the two as the match wore on.

In the decider, Bray raced into a 4-1 lead but Bascome broke for 4-2 and then won the next to tie the set.

But Bray held the next game and broke his rival in the tenth game to secure the victory.

In the Ladies' singles final, Laverne Stowe held on to win in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 over another British newcomer, Lucy Windsor.

Windsor got off to a good start but then began to falter. Stowe levelled the match in the second set and was up 4-1 in the third when she began to suffer from cramp.

She asked for medical time out but needed to hold up play once more soon after, incurring a point violation for delay of game.

However, despite suffering badly from a limp she held on to win 6-2 as her opponent tired.
