Newly-wed in love with Island course
The wedding bells may have stopped chiming, but the gifts keep showering on Canadian pro Ian Doig.
Doig, who recently tied the knot with his bride Cathleen, is the current leader at the Bermuda Open.
The Canadian raised many eyebrows during Thursday's opening round by carding a superb five under par 66, his best round ever on local shores.
"I managed to get off to a very good start," reflected Doig yesterday.
"And really it was funny because I played alongside P.H. Horgan and Dennis Hendershott and they both got off to good starts as well. So we were all playing very well at one point in time."
Doig birdied the second, third and fifth holes, nailed a 14 foot putt on seven for eagle before carding another birdie on nine to make the turn at six under par 30.
"It was fun to make the turn at six under," he added. "I three putted ten on the backside so that was a little blip. But I made a good birdie putt at 17. So all in all I played very solid golf and I think going back through the years that was my lowest ever score here at the Open."
His previous best was a 67.
"I love this golf course and I just think that it is a great course," added Doig, a pro at Jewel of Algongquin Golf Club in Dwight, Ontario.
"I enjoy coming here and playing. A good course doesn't usually give up a lot of birdies and to go out and shoot five under par yesterday (Thursday) was a lot of fun."
Doig, the current Ontario PGA champion, is coming off a solid summer of golf on the Canadian pro circuit.
"I won the Ontario PGA championship in July and finished third in the Canadian Club Pro Championships," he added.
"So I have been building on my confidence and things have been really good."
Doig's opening round 66 fell one shot shy of the official course record of 65 set by Andrew Pitt in the 1990s.
