Nine-man Wanderers force replay
BAA Wanderers 2 St. David's 2
(after extra time)
St. David's were almost embarrassed by nine-men BAA Wanderers before Kevin Lambe's extra-time equaliser earned them a replay in this FA Cup first round clash at BAA Field yesterday.
The home side were clearly more happy with the outcome, having not only held out during 30 minutes of extra-time with nine players but also having taken the lead for the second time.
The best chances of the match fell to St. David's, most of their players more than half the age of those from BAA. But as is so often the case in the FA Cup, experience counted as Wanderers took the lead against the run of play in the 35th minute.
Arthur Reilly knocked a ball over the St. David's defence for Gary Wilson to beat a hesitant Sidney Minors to the ball just inside the box. He nodded it past the keeper and then followed up and planted it into an empty goal.
St. David's made two substitutions at the start of the second half as Otis Minors and Sammy Robinson came on and immediately their attack looked more purposeful as Minors gave them extra spark.
Keimo Bean lifted a shot high and wide from inside the box after Kevin Bean set him up, but in the 59th minute the equaliser finally came when Robinson flighted in a free kick which was knocked on for Minors who shielded the ball from his marker and then turned inside the box and smashed a shot into the far corner.
BAA were reduced to 10 men when Steve Black was sent off for a bad tackle on Robinson as St. David's began to impose themselves on their opponents. Four minutes before the end of regulation time, BAA were down to nine when defender Brian Cook was ejected for a foul on the threatening Paynter.
St. David's were stunned when Wanderers took the lead in the first minute of extra-time when a handball was spotted and Reilly converted from the spot.
St. David's scored 35 seconds into the second period of extra-time when Lambe netted with a low shot into the corner after the ball was only half-cleared from substitute Fiqre Crockwell's blocked shot.
Wolves 9 Social Club 0
Hat-tricks by Nakia Smith and Mark (Beaver) Ray led Wolves to an overwhelming victory in this FA Cup first round tie at BAA Field yesterday - a match that was over as a contest after the first 20 minutes.
Wolves, who reached the final as a Second Division team five years ago, were not in the mood to be upstaged by the former cup giants and put the game out of their reach with three goals in the space of 13 minutes.
Just four minutes into the game Chae Simmons broke the deadlock when he calmly converted a far post cross from the right side by Vince (VJ) Minors.
Social Club were quickly shown to be vulnerable with crosses as Jared Peniston opened the Social Club defence with a strong run down the left before crossing perfectly for Nakia Smith to tap in from six yards. Four minutes later Smith had a second when he met Ray's cross from the right and headed inside the far post.
Social Club didn't possess the quality to come from three goals down and frustration was beginning to show as Wolves kept on the throttle, adding a fourth in the 29th minute when Tori Davis scored with a low shot from 25 yards that `keeper Tyrone Brooks misjudged and let roll past him.
After that it was just a question of how many Wolves would score. Ray opened his account with the team's fifth in the 31st minute following another Peniston cross from the left. Social Club came closest to scoring in the first half when Marcus Matthews smashed a long range shot against the post.
Wolves coasted in the second half but still found the net on four more occasions. Minors finally got on the scoresheet in the 50th minute following another Peniston move on the left flank and then Ray added his second of the match when he beat the `keeper from near the edge of the box. That made it 7-0 and in the space of five minutes both Smith and Ray completed their hat-tricks.
Substitute Gerald Georges supplied the cross to the far post in the 73rd minute which Smith converted with a diving header and in the 78th minute Ray beat the `keeper with a shot inside the box.
Frustration told on Social Club defender Yusef Richardson who, after suffering an injury in the 84th minute, shouted back at and then confronted a female Wolves fan who was taunting him. Social Club finished the match with 10 men as Richardson never returned to the field.
