Not so lucky for Shamrock

Harness racing action was fast and furious yesterday with a large number of drivers turning out to compete on a track at Vesey Street that was in surprisingly good condition after heavy rain on Christmas day.

The blustery wind may have been responsible for the moderate crowd, but those who participated were able to conquer the conditions and record some good times.

A total of 32 races took place with only one incident occurring - when

Lee Raynor Jr. and Shamrock Runaway came to grief.

Fortunately, both the driver and the horse he has raced and owned for a year escaped without any sort of injury.

The accident happened after they bore too close to pylons in their two-year-old stakes elimination heat.

Raynor was assisted immediately and within a short space of time both horse and driver were up and trotting off to a safety zone.

The two, three and four-year-old stakes races were the feature of the day, competition taking place during the second half of the programme.

The eventual winner of the two-year-old stakes was Ceramic Shamrock, owned by Colby Sousa, while honours in the three-year-old stakes went to Killer's Legacy of Tanglewood Stables, owned by Joseph Viera.

Shady's Liberty, owned by Inwood Stables and driven by Nick DeCosta, was the winner of the four-year-old event.
