Onions outplayed as BAA close the gap

BAA moved to within a point of leaders MR Onions after comfortably beating their rivals 3-1 on Saturday.

BAA dominated the first half, scoring three times inside the first 30 minutes.

The opener was a scrambled effort from David Gibbs from a corner, the second a shot from Martin Jones after the Onions defenders had backed off and the third came from the boot of Guiseppe Coco.

Onions, who have played more games than anyone else and have also dropped points against lowly Dandy Town Roots, were lucky not to go further behind with Gary Wilson missing an open goal just before half-time and Gary Stewart hitting the post early in the second half.

Onions' consolation goal came from Eoghan O'Dwyer with a free kick curled into the top right corner.

Key West continued to look dangerous as they crushed A Division newcomers St. George's 5-1. Zane Stowe and Steven Mendes notched two goals each and Webster Mills the other while William Richardson replied for St. George's.

Tuff Dogs and North Village shared the points in a 3-3 thriller at BAA Field. Nelson Martins and Jeff Franklin gave Dogs at 2-0 lead before half-time but Village came storming back in the second half with goals from Kevin Bailey, Ross Lambe and Elliot Jennings. A last-minute Carlos Lopes effort salvaged a point for Dogs.

Lobster Pot moved up to fourth after holding off a wasteful PHC who missed chance after chance. Chief culprit was national coach Kyle Lightbourne who had a dismal time with a series of misdirected headers.

Pot improved after the break with Jean-Paul Dyer volleying in from close range after a David Allison flick. Allison wrapped it up late in the game by slotting home a cross.

Late on Lightbourne finally got a header on target and past the keeper only to be denied by defender Chris Way who stopped it going over the line with a brilliant header of his own.

Dandy Town Roots recorded their first league win of the season with a 5-1 thrashing of Valley FC. Walter Musson gave Roots the early lead with a neat back-heel after good approach work from Paul Cann and Darron Simons on the left. Valley equalised from the penalty spot after the Roots 'keeper upended a Valley forward and Simons then put Roots back in front before the break.

In the second half Musson scored his second from the penalty spot after Cann was pulled down. Lionel Furbert made it four after Musson back-heeled into his path and Furbert drilled a left foot scorcher into the roof of the net from close range. Michael Wells finished off the afternoon by rounding the keeper and slotting home.

The B Division is still dominated by Island XI who kept their 100 percent record with a 6-2 hammering of Somerset Bridge Peskies. Xavier James helped himself to five while Paul Mello got one. Paul Humphreys and Ruffins Hill replied for Peskies.

Vasco beat Hamilton Parish 7-5 with Bo Saggar grabbing a hat-trick and Joe Barbosa, Joe Cunha, Andrew Griffiths and Gregory Todd all finding the net.

A Philip Clarke hat-trick helped Devonshire Lions to a 5-2 victory over Prospect/Fire. Derek Weeks and Arthur Sinclair also chalked up strikes while Cal Smith got both Prospect/Fire goals.

The Devonshire All-Stars/Pest Control match was postponed due to bad weather.

Somerset Extros are still defeating allcomers in the C Division but were made to work for their latest victory over MR Onions Real Men who clawed their way back to 2-2 only to lose to a late winner.

Former MR Onions Sunday player Gareth Lewis scored against his old club in the opening moments, evading the last defender before smashing the ball into the far corner. Shortly after an unmarked Troy (Starsky) Govia controlled a cross and had time to pick his spot.

But Onions began to take a grip on the game with the impressive Mike Baker smashing in a rocket from 25 yards shortly before half-time. In the second half Phil Heaney found himself with time and space to volley home and level the scores and he should have put his side ahead when he was sent racing through minutes later but his drive rebounded off the post.

In the dying minutes Lewis latched on to a long ball and rounded the keeper to win the game and keep Extros' 100 percent record.

Dockyard Falcons had no trouble against lowly Wolves with Sean Symons helping himself to a hat-trick. Dwayne DeRosa, Gary Trott and Sam DeSilva completed the 6-0 rout.

Prison Officers picked up their first points of the season in unhappy circumstances as opponents Warwick United were unable to field a team.
