Our first boxing world champ
Teresa Perozzi upset the odds to become the first Bermudian to claim a boxing world title when she defeated the unbeaten Scroller Carrington in Trinidad.
Perozzi, Bermuda?s only pro fighter, pummelled her local opponent in front of 1,500 fans on Friday night at the Jean Pierre Complex in Port of Spain, forcing a sixth-round stoppage to claim the vacant WIBA Middleweight belt.
The fifth fight on the card, Perozzi ? who began her career on Fight Night ? improved her pro record to 3-2 with the one-sided victory over Carrington (6-0-1) to claim her place in Bermudian pugilistic folklore.
?She was very cocky at the weigh-in,? Perozzi told ZBM last night.
?But people were very supportive. I just went in there and tried to fight as I had planned. But when I realised she couldn?t match my power, I switched to the mode I always go into to.
?I think I held back a little bit but it?s a great feeling to have won.
?I felt I was in control and got the result deserved after all my training.?
Perozzi, who is hoping to get another home fight by the end of year, was in control throughout against the local favourite although many pundits felt the fight should have been stopped two rounds earlier ? trainer Fitzroy Richard threw in the towel in round six with his girl being pummelled against the ropes.
The Bermudian, who was hampered by a lack of sparring partners in the lead up to the bout, was the first from the Island ever to be involved in a title fight ? although both Troy Darrell, ranked fifth in the world, and Olympic bronze medallist Clarence Hill came close.
And her victory came on a night of controversy in Trinidad which saw low attendances and some one-sided bouts and then bizarre scenes on Saturday morning when American boxing official Don (Moose) Lewis was arrested at the airport after a row over contracts and a refusal to give up the title belts ? although Perozzi got her?s.
The fighter is expected to return home to Bermuda either today or tomorrow.
