Packed stadium rekindles memories of earlier triumphs

NOTHING fills the National Sports Centre faster than a good run for the national football team in a World Cup qualifying campaign.

At almost the same record speed at which Bermuda Music Festival tickets were snapped up by enthusiasts keen to see the likes of Alicia Keyes and Beyonce, fans have guaranteed a sold-out match for Bermuda's crucial World Cup qualifying second leg match against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday.

The tie hangs delicately in the balance after Bermuda's shocking 2-1 win in Trinidad last weekend. A draw or 1-0 defeat will see Bermuda creating history by eliminating a Trinidad team that qualified for the last World Cup. Calls for local fans to be the 12th man have produced the desired response with all of the 4,300 tickets sold by Wednesday afternoon - effectively two business days after the team's victory in Trinidad.

On Wednesday, as available tickets were being purchased, David Sabir (pictured), General Secretary of the Bermuda Football Association, said: "It's going to be about 4,300." He revealed that no additional (temporary) seating will be brought into the stadium to increase the capacity for Sunday's match.
