Paris special guest at Sports Fair

Viewers will be able to relive solo navigator Alan Paris' epic journey around the globe at next week's second annual Sports Fair to be held at Number One Shed on Front Street.

Paris will be the special guest at this year's event at which sports enthusiasts will get an opportunity to meet with members of the Island's various sports associations.

The solo circumnavigator will be on hand with video footage and photographs highlighting his 28,000-mile voyage around the world in the Around Alone Race which he completed earlier this year.

Indoor soccer professional David Bascome, last year's special guest, has also agreed to fly in for the annual fair.

The event will officially kick off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, with a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by Sports Minister Dale Butler.

Several demonstrations and displays will be staged by the Island's sporting associations. Admission is free.

"Thirty-six local sports governing bodies have been invited and Alan Paris will be the special guest," confirmed event organiser, Sports Management Action Committee (SMAC) vice-president Craig Smith.

"He will have his own booth where he will be showing a video of his journey around the world. He will also have additional photos and information about the journey. David Bascome will also be there and we are hoping other local sports personalities can also attend."

Smith said over 600 sports enthusiasts attended last year's inaugural event and he hopes overall numbers will increase this year.

"The whole idea is to promote, market and advertise all the sports and recreational activities on the Island so that people know what's available," added Smith.

"It's obviously a place where people can obtain information and we want them to be able to participate and be involved in administering all of the sports on the Island.

"There will be demonstrations like fencing being put on. It's a free event and there aren't too many free things in the world today. All people have to do is come in, have a walk around and realise that they can be involved in so many different kinds of sport."
