Parish celebrate first victory

Hamilton Parish, who joined the Commercial Cricket League this season after almost a decade in the cricketing wilderness, broke their duck at the second attempt, thrashing nine-man West Indian Association by seven wickets.

Defending champions North Village and rivals Forties both maintained 100 percent records as in-form medium pacers Reggie Benjamin and Blake West produced five-wicket hauls to engineer emphatic victories over Fine Leg Byes and Western Stars respectively.

Parish, shot out for 30 by Forties in their opening match en route to an eight-wicket defeat, bundled out WIA for 84 at Shelly Bay as medium pacers Cal Burgess (three for eight from six overs) and Curtis Lee (three for 28 from six) inflicted the bulk of the damage.

Only Chris Clarke (25) and Junior Watts (21 not out) offered any real resistance for WIA who were then powerless to stop Parish completing victory in the 29th over despite using seven bowlers. Opener Frederick Simons (34) and number three Alvin Baker (26) led the Parish charge.

?Our players were more settled this week as far as batting and bowling went,? said Parish scorer Danika Gibbons.

Benjamin followed up his six-wicket haul against Jamaican Association by bagging five for 20 in 11 overs as Village skittled out Fine Leg Byes for 74 at Garrison Field, skipper Ricky Hill taking three for 16 from eight overs.

FLB were in danger of being shot out for under 40 when they crashed to 33 for eight after being sent in but knocks of 18 apiece by James Corby and Ajit Tiwary gave the total some late respectability.

Village made a poor start themselves, slipping to 13 for three as Mike Levon (0), David Scraders (three) and Ernest McCallan (one) fell cheaply, Troy Berkeley impressing on his return to Commercial League action with figures of two for 12 from 11 overs.

But opener Mike Payne, who struck five boundaries in his unbeaten 39, and Allan Walker (20 not out) shrugged off the loss of early wickets to ease Village home in 23 overs with an unbroken stand of 62.

Despite a five-wicket return by former Cup Match player Allan Brangman, Forties ran out winners by 124 runs over Western Stars, who had defaulted their opening match, at St. John?s Field as opener Braxton Stowe cracked a half century and fisherman West reeled in a five-wicket haul after taking six wickets against Parish last week.

Stowe, who hit six fours in his 89-ball 63, laid the foundation for Forties? 169 by adding 75 runs for the fourth wicket with Rohan Davis, who made 39, after Forties were sent in on a well-paced pitch that got progressively lower, making it difficult to play shots.

Brangman finished with five for 32 from 10.1 overs while Cecil Tucker took two for 33 from 10.

Stars lost openers Chris Smith and Jeamel Smith to run-outs ? one a direct hit by Gerald Bean ? and never recovered, eventually tumbling to 45 all out in the 18th over, Tucker topscoring with 16.

West finished with five for 23 from nine overs while newcomer Yatin Gawas ? like team-mate Johnny Simoes he hails from Goa ? claimed three for 14 from 8.2 overs.
