Peniston eager to get back on goal trail

While Seion Darrell was enjoying some of his finest moments in top flight football, Dandy Town team-mate Jared Peniston endured one of those Sunday afternoons he might quickly want to forget.

A constant menace to the Boulevard defence during Hornets? 4-2 FA Cup triumph at the Barn, Peniston must have touched every blade of grass, carved acres of space for himself but failed to hit the target after going agonisingly close on more than one occasion.

?I?m doing everything else I need to be doing but score. I just can?t seem to find the back of the net at the moment,? the 23 -year-old Capital G Bank employee told . ?But it isn?t frustrating because at the end of the day it is all about the team.?

Peniston nearly cracked the ice against Blazers, particularly in the first half when he dragged a shot wide of the post, watched another effort roll past the upright and then had an absolute sitter soar over the bar with keeper Corbin Durrant beaten and the entire goal at his mercy.

Peniston rose to local stardom as a youngster at Wolves where he won a Martonmere Cup and Dudley Eve Trophy title under former coach Dennis Brown before moving onto to the Hornets.

In a short period of time, though, he has added to his personal list of achievements with a league title, the FA Cup and a second Martonmere Cup with the St.John?s Road club.

Peniston also featured in Bermuda?s 2004 World Cup, bid playing under Kenny Thompson.

Like many, the Bermuda College graduate would like to see the national team involved in more matches on the international front.

?I think we always wait too long to begin doing things,? argued Peniston, who prefers to shoot with his right boot.

But while he remains keen to lace up for Kyle Lightbourne?s national squad in the future, for the time being Peniston is determined to help Town build on this month?s Martonmere Cup success.

Hornets edged Somerset Trojans 1-0 on November 11 at the National Sports Centre.

?I love to play for Town because they are very serious. Devarr (Town coach Devarr Boyles) is a very good coach who I actually played alongside for the national squad when Mark Trott had the team,? Peniston added. ?Devarr is a very big inspiration and a very good coach.

?We are all a big family at Dandy Town. . . fans, players and everyone else involved with the team. And this is what I most enjoy about the club. We win and lose together as a team and nobody ever points fingers.?

Like Peniston, Boyles is also a long-time Devonshire resident. Former Wolves team-mate Anthony Thomas joined the Devonshire pair at the Barn at the beginning of the season.

As for Hornets? recent Martonmere success, Peniston insisted: ?That was just another match. I want the FA Cup, League and Friendship Trophy.?

In other words the player hopes to achieve what no other team has achieved since Vasco da Gama in 1998 ? the coveted triple crown championship.

Since then only North Village have come close, winning back-to-back Premier Division and FA Cup titles in 2001-02 and 2002- 03.

Providing a self-assessment of his career thus far, Peniston noted: ?I think I?ve had a good career in terms of winning championships so far. But I?m not finished yet. I still would like to win every cup there is to win and play in the World Cup again for Bermuda.?

Having advanced to the next round of the FA Cup, Town can now return their attention to this weekend?s crucial away league clash with defending champions Devonshire Cougars at the Den.

?We need to win that match to remain in contention,? Peniston added.
