Perfect start for Island's squash team
Bermuda's men's squash team have got off to a perfect start in Barbados, cruising to two 5-0 victories over Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica respectively.
The first tie, on Monday evening, was, in truth, a complete annihilation, with no match lasting more than half an hour and not one of the Bermudian players conceding a game.
With the Trinidadian team resting their number one player Paul DeVerteuil, thereby admitting that they held out little hope of pulling off an upset, Bermuda's No.5 seed Sam Stevens was given the straightforward task of overcoming the Trinidadian reserve Jean Marc DeMontrichard. He did so in straight games spending only 18 minutes on court.
James Stout, playing at No.4 for Bermuda had a similarly light workout against Mark Pontifex, beating the 24-year-old 10-8, 9-0, 9-1 in 19 minutes.
A Bermudian victory was secured when newly crowned Caribbean Champion Gary Plumstead, looking somewhat jaded after the rigours of the individual event, nevertheless breezed past the challenge of the young Colin Ramasra, 9-2, 9-1, 9-4.
The formalities were completed by Nick Kyme and Tommy Sherratt, both of whom were rarely stretched during their straight games victories.
Yesterday saw the team take on the Jamaicans and it was much the same story.
Sherratt took on Warren Burrowes and beat him 9-0, 9-5, 9-0 in 21 minutes, while Stout defeated Bruce Levy 9-2, 9-4, 9-4 in 31 minutes.
Plumstead was next on against James Bullock, winning 9-3, 9-4, 9-3 in 23 minutes and that was followed by Stevens who saw off Chris Binnie 9-6, 9-4, 9-4 in 34 minutes.
Kyme was last on and his earlier exertions in the singles competition contributed to him losing the first game against Wayne Burrowes 5-9. However, he came back to win the next three 9-2, 9-3, 9-2 achieving victory in 28 minutes.
The team take on Venezuela this morning.
