Perozzi takes jab at pro title
Boxer Teresa Perozzi is confident of a knockout performance when she steps into the ring for her first professional fight on Bermuda?s shores.
Perozzi has a 1-0-0 record but her split decision win over Nicole Conant in March of this year came at the Aladdin Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
Having subsequently returned to Bermuda after a stint in California, she is keen to show local fight fans just what she is about.
Her chance will come on December 6 when she headlines a fight night at Number One Shed in Hamilton.
Perozzi (29) will be taking on 27-year-old Trinidadian Scroller Carrington for the vacant North American Boxing Association super middleweight title.
As there are no ranking requirements, the fact Perozzi has only had the one previous pro fight is not an issue.
By comparison, Carrington is somewhat of a veteran having had six fights and established a 5-0-1 record, four of her wins coming via knockouts.
Though she does not know too much about her opponent, Perozzi is nevertheless in bullish mood entering an eight round bout that is twice the distance of her previous encounter.
?I have been training really hard for the last month with Forty Rego and Troy Darrell,? she said. ?Troy has been sparring with me and we now have a ring up at Rego?s gym so that is really good.
?I have done a lot of running, beach work and we have been focusing a lot on technique. I am going to look real different from the last time I fought here (as an amateur).?
Perozzi said she felt ?more professional? and was now a more technical fighter.
?I am not just trying to knock somebody out,? she said.
This change has come about through her relationship with Darrell.
?He is such a technical fighter and he just inspires me to be like him, or as close as I can be for a woman,? she said. ?He and Rego are just so committed. They have sacrificed a lot for me and they are not getting anything in return ? just yet.?
Despite enjoying better facilities in Los Angeles, Perozzi said it was in Bermuda where she had really made progress.
?I had so much in LA,? she said. ?I trained at a place with three rings and ten heavy bags and famous fighters but it didn?t feel as good as this. It?s really just the people training you. If they have confidence in you that helps your own confidence.?
Perozzi, who has set up her own massage business, only arrived in Bermuda shortly after Cup Match and so, in some respects, this fight has come at pretty short notice.
However, she believes she is as prepared as she can be.
?Psychologically, I am very prepared and fitness-wise I am feeling really good,? she said. ?I wouldn?t have chosen to go for an eight round fight just yet, I wanted to build up to that, but it was one of those opportunities that I just didn?t feel I could pass up.?
She says she believes she can go the distance if necessary, but, like every other boxer asked the same question, says she is confident it won?t go that far.
?Everything is different in a fight, it?s not like training, your adrenaline, everything but I don?t plan to let it go eight rounds,? she said.
Without giving away too much Perozzi said she aimed to wear Carrington down.
?I want to box the girl. I wanted to really show what I have been learning,? she said. ?I want to destroy her body. That?s what we are trying to do.
?So many women just focus on the head and trying to get a knockout. We have been practising more on body shots and women can?t really take that. Not many people can, but women especially because they are not used to receiving that.?
Asked to predict the outcome, she said: ?With my corner people there?s just no way we can lose, that?s how I feel. We are all so focused and committed to this. Everyone has put 100 percent and more into it.?
