Perozzi?s world title hopes hit by lack of sparring partners
Bermuda?s female pro boxer Teresa Perozzi has just 20 days left before her crack at a world title but is more afraid of her own lack of proper training than she is of her opponent, Scroller Carrington.
Perozzi, who still has to drop another eight pounds to make the weight for the vacant WIBA middleweight contest in Trinidad later this month, is being hampered ? as she always has been ? by a lack of sparring opportunities on her home Island.
Although she is happy her fitness work is going well, she has not been throwing as many as punches as she would like ahead of her first fight on foreign soil since her debut in Las Vegas.
?It?s tough at the moment,? said Perozzi, who is trying to juggle motherhood and her own massage business with the rigours of preparing for such a big bout.
?There is nothing else going on here, so no one else appears to be in training for anything which makes it hard for me to get sparring in.
?There?s no Fight Night or anything around the corner, so I am having to do it pretty much on my own.?
Perozzi?s had the opportunity to spar with recent Hall of Fame inductee ? and the man with the fastest ever knockout at Madison Square Garden ? Troy Darrell, but beyond that she has been severely limited in her options.
But Perozzi, ranked six as a Super Middleweight, believes she can still give the title contest her best shot despite the obvious problems.
?The ideal way to prepare would be to go abroad, ? said Perozzi, who has had some sponsorship from the Little Venice Group to help her with her lofty cause.
?But it isn?t really possible with the job and my son so I am having just to make the most of the facilities here. I am doing a lot of strength work at the Olympic Club and going running four times a week but what I really need is boxing training ? but the facilities just aren?t here in Bermuda as we all know.
?Yes, these things are problems for me but not enough to stop me going out there and giving a good performance. This girl is a good opponent for me and I am confident that I can get the job done.
?The preparation isn?t ideal but you will always go into a fight ? especially at this level where only a small handful are actually full time pros ? knowing that there was more you could have done.
?I imagine she will be in the same boat as me but I am going to go down there and look to outbox her technically and get that belt. This is the biggest fight of my career.?
It will be her first fight abroad after three bouts here, a Fight Night victory sandwiched between points defeats to Laura (Lady Ram) Ramsey and Monica Nunez.
The match-up will be one of four title bouts on an all-female card at the Gene Carrie Sporting Complex in Port of Spain on September 23.
The fights will be screened on delayed coverage on pay-per-view television in the US although discussions are still underway to strike a deal for Perozzi?s shot at the big time to be televised in Bermuda.
