Pettingill knocks in four as Chameleons dominate
Men's League
Police Polecats 0 Chameleons 5
A match featuring top and bottom of the table ended predictably with defending champions Chameleons overwhelming their opponents - and Mark Pettingill pouring in four goals.
During the first half, Chameleons' midfielders regularly dissected the Polecats defence with Steve Moreton in the centre controlling play, supported by Peter Illston and Peter Hughes on the flanks.
Pettingill broke the deadlock from close range and soon after Moreton fired a shot past the 'keeper off a Polecats defender.
After the interval it was all Pettingill as he cracked a second-half hat-trick that put the score out of Polecats' reach.
BCS Panthers 5 Upstarts 1
Panthers continued their fine end-of-season form with this convincing win which took them up to third place in the table.
Stephen Troake gave Panthers and early lead following a penalty stroke but that proved to be the only goal of the first half.
Youngster Benjamin Sheere tapped home from close range shortly after the interval to increase the lead to 2-0 but Upstarts continued to fight with captain Neil Carroll striking back with a goal of his own following a pass from Keir Savage.
Logan Alexander then fired a spectacular shot into the top right corner to restore Panthers' two-goal advantage and soon after Sheere was left unmarked to net his second of the game. Andrew Chlebek added Panthers' fifth.
Ladies League
Swallows A 3 Bluebirds A 2
Swallows took over the top spot as they emerged victorious in this five-goal thriller in the last meeting of the season between the two leading teams in the Ladies' A league.
Swallows were off the mark first, Rebecca Payne crossing to captain Jenny Burrell who deflected a pass to Kirsty Kelly who in turn slotted home. But by half-time Bluebirds had equalised through Liz Wright following a pass from Sarah Smith.
In the second half, Swallows regained the lead, this time Burrell netting following good work from Kelly.
Bluebirds piled on the pressure in search of another equaliser with Holly Flaxbeard and Sarah Maltby both prominent in attack. However, this offensive push left huge holes in defence and Burrell was able to find the back of the net again to put Swallows two goals clear.
Maltby reduced the arrears with Bluebirds' second but couldn't find an equaliser.
Swallows B 2 Bluebirds B 0
Swallows went into this match looking for maximum points in their bid to retain the B league title.
And they stamped their authority on the game in the first half, taking the lead from a penalty corner when Mel Burns fed Eirian Jones who fired past Bluebirds goalkeeper Becky Bartlett.
A second goal followed when Jones' pass gave Morag McRoberts an easy tap-in.
The second half saw Bluebirds tighten up defensively and add Holly Flaxbeard to their offence. This saw them create more chances, the best following a Flaxbeard pass to Liz Wright whose shot rebounded off the post before being cleared by the Swallows defence.
Ravens A 2 Police Orioles A 0
In a bottom-of-the-table encounter it was Ravens who emerged victorious.
Their first goal came following a penalty corner which saw Caroline Black's shot saved by 'keeper Fiona Doe. But the deflection went to Ravens' Joanna Bielby who put the rebound away.
Doe was in for a long day as Ravens continued to apply the pressure on an under-strength Orioles side.
In the second half, Orioles' Gertie Barker and Georgina Adlam did well to repel several Ravens' attacks but Ravens were able to continually find the open player. When Louisa Bussey put a shot on goal, Doe's rebound wasn't cleared by her stretched defence and Ana Anton collected the ball to dribble around the 'keeper and net the second goal.
In another weekend match, Canaries A crushed Cardinals A 6-1 with Lisa DeSilva collecting a hat-trick.
Emma Kelly scored twice and Stacey Paynter once with Leslie Wollmann netting Cardinals' consolation.
Iesha Castle scored twice and Melanie Fullerton added a third as Cardinals B defeated Canaries B 3-0 while Ravens B and Orioles B drew 0-0.
