PHC opening date set
PHC Zebras are set to graze on new pastures next season as their Stadium Lane field is scheduled to re-open in September, 2002, after a three year hiatus.
The Premier Division leaders' ground hasn't been used since April, 1998, when it was torn up at the start of a major redevelopment plan.
The club had earlier scrapped night matches after they encountered electrical problems which was followed by an early morning fire in an electrical room, causing an estimated $50,000 in damage.
However, problems with the lights had existed for about 18 months prior to the fire, according to PHC president Chris Furbert.
After the team were relegated at the end of the 1998 season, club officials saw the opportunity to close the ground to undertake necessary repair work and provide the community with an improved facility by the time the team returned to the top flight.
But ever since players with PHC's football and cricket teams have been scattered at both ends of the Island as their football team enjoy the winter months at Somerset Cricket Club, while Sea Breeze Oval has become the temporary home of the cricket team.
Furbert this week refused to comment on further proposed plans until after all parties had completed their discussions.
But he said: "The initial project of installing a new lighting system and re-surfacing the pitch is currently on track for the 2002 season.
"Martin Brown of Brown and Company has assured us that the field will be completed before the start of next season and there are plans in the works to include the overall development of the new facility. Those plans will be revealed in the not to distant future."
