PHC seek end to the search for silverware
Just like opponents Devonshire Colts, PHC Zebras will be seeking to put an end to their very own Martonmere Cup drought when the teams clash in the final at Wellington Oval on Monday.
Despite appearing in six finals in the last 30 years, Colts have not lifted the trophy once during that time.
And PHC's record is not a great deal better as it has now been 20 years since the Warwick club last galloped off with Lord Martonmere's showpiece and Monday's match will mark their sixth appearance in the final.
Many of coach Mark Wade's charges would not recall the club's last Martonmere triumph, although this will be the Zebras' third appearance in a final over the last two years, having made it through to last season's Dudley Eve and Friendship Trophy finals.
PHC were decisively beaten by Wolves in the Dudley Eve but bounced back to seize the Friendship and thus deal a crushing blow to North Village's hopes of a coveted triple crown.
So far this season, Wade's team have suffered just one defeat, a season-opening league loss to Dandy Town.
And they are unbeaten so far in Martonmere Cup action, having recorded convincing 4-1 and 5-0 wins over Devonshire Cougars and Somerset Trojans respectively en route to the final.
Colts also made it through the qualifying stages without a defeat.
In Zebras' previous Martonmere Cup final appearance in 1992-93, the club went down 1-0 to Somerset - a decade after they had beaten the Trojans 4-1 on the `carpet'.
Die-hard PHC fans who can recall the team's last Martonmere triumph will forever remember the devastating display of marksmanship by hat-trick hero Kenny Burt - taped boots and all - who almost single-handedly floored Somerset. Brandon (Pickles) Robinson applied the icing to the cake by netting Zebras' fourth while Kelly Simmons scored Trojans' consolation.
PHC will now be looking to emulate that performance against Colts and Wade is fully aware that his current squad have the opportunity to add to the club's legacy.
"We haven't won the trophy since 1982 and obviously we will be looking to use that as an incentive," said the coach.
"They have an opportunity to do something that hasn't been achieved in 20 years and something that some of the guys that they used to watch play weren't able to do," added Wade, who is one of many PHC players never to have won the trophy.
"We will have to be tight at the back and not allow any goals and going forward obviously we will be looking to capitalise on our chances.
"I think that Colts are a really good opposition for us but we are not going to take anything for granted. And obviously we haven't played them yet, so, yes, we will very wary of that."
Wade also warned his team not to get carried away with their last result, a convincing 5-0 defeat of Somerset.
"Colts are a different team from Somerset. They approach the game in a different way and that will call for us to step it up," he said.
"But team morale is high and everyone is certainly geared up for Monday."
Zebras will need to keep an eye on Colts' dangerman Aljame Zuill, while coach Ray Jones will also be pinning his hopes on Stephen Mendes and Anthony Thomas in the middle.
Colts skipper Shannon Burgess will again be directing things at the back while it remains to be seen whether Jamal Smith, McKonnen Hollis, Peter Sampson and Lloyd Holder will have recovered from injuries in time for the clash which will be preceded by the Women's Konica Cup final between holders Rude Girls and Dandy Town.
It also remains to be seen whether Zebras' Otis Steede, Jevone Sealey and Stephen Astwood have recovered from slight ailments.
Elsewhere over the holiday weekend, First Division action resumes tomorro with a potentially exciting top-of-the-table clash at Lord's between current league leaders Ireland Rangers and unbeaten Hamilton Parish.
Both of these sides have recorded three wins so far with Rangers topping the table on goal difference.
Southampton Rangers should pick up their second win of the season when they travel to White Hill Field to take on Paget, while Wolves tackle St.David's at BAA Field. Young Men's Social Club and Prospect lock horns at Police Field. All matches begin at 3 p.m.
