Power boaters go ahead with weekend meet

Despite last Sunday's fatal crash, members of the Bermuda Power Boat Association (BPBA) will race again this weekend.

The organisation's president Chris Roque confirmed yesterday that, following a meeting of the BPBA executive committee on Wednesday night, it was decided this Sunday's meet should proceed as originally planned.

He disclosed that some mark of respect would be paid to Stuart Smith on Sunday. Smith (34) died after the C-Class powerboat in which he and Michael Araujo were competing crashed off Coral Beach in the annual Around The Island race.

The New Zealander's body was flown from the Island yesterday en route to his homeland for burial. It is expected to arrive in his home town, Whakatane, on Monday and his family has indicated that the funeral is likely to be next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Roque said no official results from last Sunday's race would be released until the investigation into the deadly accident is completed.
