Premier big guns in FA Cup showdown

At least two of the Island?s Premier Division clubs will exit the FA Cup competition at the very first hurdle.

During yesterday?s first round draw, nine-time champions Somerset Trojans were pitted against 2004 runners-up Devonshire Cougars while 2004 champions Dandy Town were drawn against Boulevard.

Cup holders North Village will come up against Commercial outfit Vasco Mariners.

Newly-promoted Ireland Rangers take on Bermuda Pest Control while PHC Zebras ? joint record holders for the most wins along with Trojans ? face First Division outfit St.David?s.

Devonshire Colts face a tricky fixture against a bolstered Key West Rangers side capable of springing an upset on the day.

Yesterday?s draw involved a total of 30 teams with only First Division X Roads Warriors receiving a bye.

The opening round of the competition will be played over two separate dates, November 13 and 24, at venues to be announced at a later date, according to Bermuda Football Association executive Charles Clarke.

When notified of his team?s first round opponents, Trojans coach Dennis Brown told : ?It?s going to be a hard game for both teams and on the day the better team will prosper.

?Of course, there?s concern in the camp because Cougars are a very dangerous opponent. Therefore we will have to prepare ourselves as we do for any other game.?

Trojans barely edged Cougars 3-2 in an electrifying Premier Division league encounter exactly one week ago at Cricket Lane.

?I thought Cougars played extremely well though I also think our guys took their foot off the throttle,? Brown added.

The Trojans coach anticipates the FA Cup tie to be no less absorbing.

?That was a real rollercoaster ride but in the end we prevailed and I feel the FA game will basically be the same.

?These are two hungry clubs and the team that makes the least mistakes and capitalises on their chances will be prosperous in the end.?

Cougars coach Andrew Bascome is also bracing himself for another potential cliffhanger.

?Judging from the game the other night I can honestly tell this is something to look forward to,? he said.

?I was very pleased with the level of play up in Somerset and the passion that was shown among the fans. But I can assure you we will do our best to get a favourable result.

?I thoroughly enjoyed that game the other night, though I was a bit disappointed the end result did not go our way. We made errors and we had to pay for them. It?s as simple as that.?

While it?s obvious neither Cougars nor Trojans received the luck of draw, as Bascome put it: ?In my experiences in the FA Cup every game is tricky no matter who the opposition might be.

?Even if you are playing what could be considered a lesser team it?s an opportunity for them to rise to the occasion.?
