Rangers look to upset the Stars

After watching their Camel Cup aspirations literally "wash away" in their last outing against Western Stars, Southampton Rangers will attempt to go where no other team has gone before this season - go on to defeat Albert Steede and Co. during tomorrow's feature match at Southampton Oval.

But first they will have to deal at home with the same Somerset side they narrowly defeated by two wickets last weekend up at Somerset Cricket Club in a match brought forward to today so as not to conflict with Southampton's tour of England later this summer.

Stars lead the Premier Division with Southampton in hot pursuit in second place, while defending league champions St.David's hold third position.

Rangers' spinners David Saltus and Keith Wainwright have performed admirably with the ball in the absence of pacers Kenny Phillips and Gary Williams, who continues his self-imposed exile.

Phillips did, however, make a return to Southampton's line-up last weekend and picked up two vital wickets, while skipper Janeiro Tucker is still battling to regain the devastating form which saw him break Lloyd James' long standing Cup Match record for the highest individual score last year.

Former Star, Gary Brangman has also been phenomenal in playing a major role in Southampton's early success with the bat, while it remains to be seen whether or not former skipper Olin Jones returns in the nick of time for tomorrow's all-important showdown from a lengthy injury layoff.

Veteran player/coach Clevie Wade and skipper Tucker have also shared the brunt of their team's bowling, while Quinton Sherlock Jr. still tries to find his line and length.

But their league title aspirations will be fully put to the test in the form of a Stars unit that has yet to taste defeat.

Skipper Steede is coming off of superb century (101 not out) last week in a win against St.George's, and on the small confines of Southampton Oval could pose a serious threat to Southampton's hopes.

Jermaine Postlethwaite, Justin Robinson, Hasan Durham, Arnold Manders and Treadwell Gibbons Sr. - deputising in the absence of his son who is still out nursing an injury along with Cleon Scotland - will also have to be kept in check.

Stars will also depend heavily upon their spin trio of Durham, Dwayne Leverock and Manders and should have the edge in the bowling department with Robinson and Maurice Lowe capable of generating considerable movement on the grassy surface at the Oval.

In another interesting match up, Bailey's Bay will look to continue their winning form of the previous weekend against Somerset Cricket Club at Sea Breeze Oval, while league champions St.David's and Cleveland have had their match at Lord's rescheduled.

St.George's and Flatts will do battle at Wellington Oval.

In the First Division, Warwick should jump at the chance to close the gap between themselves and league leaders PHC who have a bye.

Warwick take on Social Club at St.John's Field, while Police and Devonshire are set to clash at Police Field.

Somerset Bridge, victorious two weeks ago in their last outing against Devonshire, travel further west to meet fellow Western Counties rivals Willow Cuts at Somerset Cricket Club.

All matches to begin at 12 noon.
