Rangers the top of a messy bunch

Southampton Rangers will retain the Premier Division title this weekend if they win away at Somerset ? though the failure of certain clubs to hand in their scorecards has plunged the league tables into total chaos once again.

At the conclusion of every league game, the scorers are required to fill out an additional scoresheet which the Bermuda Cricket Board ask to be handed by the next day ? although there is no official deadline.

As it stands, however, a total of 12 matches are still unaccounted for in the BCB league tables, with Bailey?s Bay, Warwick, Somerset and Flatts the main culprits.

With only two rounds of fixtures to go, Rangers have handed in all 12 scorecards and are sitting four points ahead of second-placed Social Club, who have not yet handed in the scorecard from their defeat at the hands of Warwick on July 30.

The equation at the top of the table is still relatively straightforward: Social Club can catch Rangers if they win their two remaining games against Bay and the leaders, but they would also have to rely on the defending champions losing their last two games as well.

Who could be relegated from the top flight is more complicated, with Bay only registered as playing five games all season, Somerset eight and Warwick and Flatts seven.

The BCB leave the responsibility for handing in the scorecards entirely with the clubs ? with the proviso that they will only be awarded points if and when they do so.

A spokesman from the governing body admitted last night that there was still ?a great deal of confusion? as to the points total of each team ? adding the BCB would be chasing up clubs involved in the ?missing? games next week to ensure every side can go into the last round of fixtures knowing their true positions.

Meanwhile, while Rangers have dominated the league all season, losing only one game, they will have to clinch the title without the help of their many stars ? who include 17-year-old Malachi Jones who was a surprise national squad pick for the current tour of Canada.

Lionel Cann, Janeiro Tucker and Dwayne Leverock are also away on international duty, while wicketkeeper-batsman Kwame Tucker is still recovering from a hamstring tear sustained against Jamaica at the Stanford 20-20 tournament in Antigua.

Elsewhere, St. David?s play Western Stars at Lord?s, Warwick take on fellow bottom-dwellers Flatts at the Southampton Oval and Bailey?s Bay play Charlie Marshall?s Social Club at the Sea Breeze Oval.

In the First Division, Police play St. George?s at Police Field, Cleveland take on Somerset Bridge at Wellington Oval, Leg Trappers play PHC at White Hill Field and Devonshire Rec. come up against Willow Cuts at home.

St. George?s and Cleveland have already been promoted to the Premier Division, although St. George?s have yet to hand in the scorecard for their victory against Somerset Bridge on July 30 to make this official.

The Bridge take on Willow Cuts today in the Western Counties competition at White Hill, with the game set to get underway at 10 a.m.
