Record-breaker Ashley steals the show at Age Group meet

Ten year-old Ashley Yearwood stole the show at the Winter Age Group Swimming Championships held at the BASA Pool over the weekend.

The Harbour Swim Club youngster set two records on Friday evening another two on Saturday afternoon in a meet which saw eight new age group marks established over the two days of competition.

Five of those records fell on Friday evening with Yearwood leading the way.

She hit the wall first in the girls? 9-10 200 metres individual medley in a time of two minutes, 56.11 seconds, beating the old record by five seconds and then lowered her own 100 metres freestyle mark in the same age group by a second, clocking 1:08.67.

Sharks swimmer Rebecca Sharpe, 14, smashed her old record by five seconds in the 200 metres backstroke with an excellent swim of 2:27.37 while team-mate Jason Mastalir, 14, lowered his 1500 metres freestyle record to 17:42.18.

The final record of the evening was set by Dolphins? David Lunn, 11, also in the 1500 metres freestyle as he came home in 23:49.16.

Saturday afternoon saw a further three records broken with Yearwood again in the limelight, eclipsing two of her own records.

In the 400 metres freestyle she improved her best time by three seconds, clocking 5:13.98 and then won the 200 metres freestyle in a new best of 2:31.44.

Wrapping up the record spree was Harbour Club?s Eleanor Gardner, 14, who finished the 800 metres freestyle in 10:00.59.
