Record-breaker Sims closes in on lead
Michael Sims' phenomenal season just gets better and better.
Just a few weeks after reaching the quarter-final stages of the US Amateur Championships, the Bermudian smashed the course record at the New England Open.
Sims, still among the amateur ranks, lies joint second on four under at the event in Rockport, Maine.
His second round 64 at the Samoset Resort course lopped one shot off a record that had stood for just 24 hours.
Event leader Brian Quinn shot a 65 during the first round on Tuesday.
Sims birdied the fourth, fifth and seventh hole en route to a 31 on the front side. His only bogey on the day was on the par five 12th but he made up for that by sinking birdies on the 10th, 11th, 14th and 15th holes on the back nine. His score would have been even better had he holed a five foot birdie putt on the final hole.
"I hit the ball better today," said Sims, whose opening round was a 72. "But I'm putting a really good roll on the putts. I'm really relaxed out there."
Sims, who attends the Unversity of Rhode Island will play in the final group during today's third round with former Rhode Island teammate Jim Salinetti.
"I am really looking forward to playing with Michael," said Salinetti, who shares second place with the Islander. "He is a good 10 yards ahead of me off the tee."
When the pair played together at university Salinetti was the number one and Sims the number two ranked player in collegiate standings in New England.
Leader Quinn had praise for both himself and Sims.
"I hit the ball real good today, better than yesterday," he said. "But I wasn't as comfortable on the greens. The greens got really, really fast in the afternoon. Sims played a great round of golf, especially in these conditions this afternoon."
Earlier in the year Sims won the North-South Amateur at Pinehurst Country Club in North Carolina.
He works at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, Rhode Island and is coached by Steve Napoli, PGA professional at the club and current President of the New England PGA.
