Ref loses patience with Lions

Top-of-the-table MR Onions will have to wait for a BFA decision after the referee called off their game against Devonshire Lions on Saturday.

Onions say they were stripped and ready while the home side had just three players on the pitch and no team sheet by three o'clock with the ref losing patience five minutes later.

But Lions, who had most of their team on the pitch by 3.10, are set to appeal the ref's decision.

Onions had hammered Lions 9-0 earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, Lobster Pot enjoyed a 2-0 win over Key West Rangers which put them in second place.

The game was a low-key affair until the 30th minute when Martin Godley lobbed the Rangers' keeper from 25 yards. Dave Allison sealed it with a second goal after a weaving run through the Rangers' defence.

North Village are third after a 2-1 win over BAA who led through a Gary Wilson strike only to succumb to efforts by Ricky Hill and Alan Smith.

Tuff Dogs shifted up the table with a 3-2 win over Valley via goals from Marco Motta, Jeff Franklin and Jamel Lovell. Valley scored through Mark Bourne and Jonathan Eve but referee Ralph Tumbridge abandoned the match in the 78th minute after Valley's MacDonald Simmons refused to leave the field after being sent off. But the result is expected to stand.

Robin Hood beat PHC 2-0 through strikes by Alex McLoughlin and Simon Turner. Hood president Paul Scope had a memorable match, breaking team-mate Derek Stapeley's arm in a three-way challenge and also injuring national coach Kyle Lightbourne who is a team-mate of Scope's on the Hood's Sunday team.

In B Division action Dandy Town Roots dismantled Pest Control 9-0 at St. John's field. Roots started early with a 20-yarder from Walter Musson, who then turned provider as he floated a cross to the back post where Sean Smith headed home. Don Lewis hit the third, dribbling past three defenders before sliding the ball home.

Sean Smith then backheeled the ball into the path of onrushing Darron Simons who drove it into the net. Smith and Simons added one more each, making the half-time score 6-0. Roots substituted the entire front line in the second half but that didn't stop them from increasing their tally with two goals from substitute Mark Trott on his debut and an own goal by Eugene Simons.

St. George's picked up a walkover win after Somerset Extros failed to field a side. The West End club will hold an emergency meeting at Somerset Cricket Club tonight to discuss this season's poor turn-outs.

Ten-man Prison Officers put up a brave show against third-placed Vasco, going 3-0 up through a Kevin Hannah hat-trick only to go down 4-3 as Paul Frias, Joe Cunha, Andrew Griffith and Joe Barrosso weighed in for Vasco in game played without a ref.

Fourth-placed Boulevard beat Prospect/Fire by the same score. Scorers' names were unavailable.

The referee failed to show up for Devonshire All-Stars' 4-2 victory over Dockyard Falcons.

Devonshire's Jeff Richardson fluffed a penalty before Zane Stowe opened the scoring with a free kick bent around the wall. Dwayne DeRosa evened things up with a header from a corner but Stowe answered with a 25-yard curling low shot that left the keeper flat footed.

The second half saw Falcons putting on some heavy pressure that finally paid off with DeRosa scoring with a similar curling shot to Stowe's effort.

All-Star's Arnold Todd got on the end of a long kick for a one-on-one which he put away and then took advantage of a tiring Falcons to make sure of the win.
