Resurgent Police ready for Rangers
It's not the policeman in the bushes with the radar gun you have to be wary of these days - more the bobby with the cricket bat in his hands.
Police's First Division side have pulled off two upset wins over Premier Division opposition in the Combined Knockout Cup and after yesterday's semi-final draw found themselves matched against powerhouses Southampton Rangers at Wellington Oval this Saturday.
Although Rangers will be the favourites, Police's form of late and their intent on restoring their status as one of the Island's leading clubs, makes for an interesting contest.
Meanwhile, perennial cup giants Western Stars and St. George's will lock horns at Sea Breeze Oval in the other semi-final.
Both matches are 50-over contests getting underway at 12 noon.
For the boys in blue, Knockout Cup victories over Cleveland and Somerset have boosted team confidence and they won't be afraid of taking on Rangers.
"I definitely believe that we belong at the top," said Police's top all-rounder Dennis Archer.
"It's unfortunate that we are in the First Division, but we are working on making our way back to the top and if all goes well we should be there next season."
However, Archer downplayed his team's cup success this season.
"We played reasonably well," he added. "The opposition wasn't as strong as we expected but we have some pretty good bowlers and we did what we had to do."
Archer himself played a major role in Police's win over Somerset at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday, seizing four wickets for 20 runs and chipping in with a brisk, unbeaten 40.
"I think that was what is expected from me," said Archer, who represented the Island during the recent America's Cup in Argentina. "As a senior national team player it was just one of those work days. Go out there, do the work and get the results."
With new acquisition, all-rounder Rashan Perera, beginning to fit in nicely, Police have a few young players suiting up for the club these days.
"We have some youngsters and if others are interested in playing the game, we ask them to come along because it is not often that we get people coming to Police this young," added Archer.
"But we do have a few youngsters who have come up through our cadet ranks who are out here to have some fun and learn more about the game. We do encourage anyone else to come along."
Ahead of Saturday's showdown with Southampton, Archer threw out a challenge to all opposing teams, boldly stating that he doesn't intend on getting out for the remainder of the season.
"All we can do is play to the best of our abilities on the day (Saturday) and wait and see what happens," he said.
