Robinson saves best for last

Laura Robinson shot a six-over-par 78 on Saturday ? her best score of the week ? to help Bermuda to a 39th place finish at the women?s World Amateur Team Golf Championships in Puerto Rico.

Showing a marked improvement on the Greg Norman-designed River course at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Robinson saved the best for last as she produced the Island team?s lowest round in the 72-hole event.

She made par on 11 of the 18 holes and birdied the par-four 16th to finish on a high.

Helped by Ebonie Burgess? round of 80, Bermuda carded a final round of 158 ? the only time during the four rounds they came in under 160.

Third member of the team, Kim Botelho, returned an 83 as Bermuda finished seven shots ahead of 40th placed Egypt. A total of 49 teams were competing.

?The weather was much the same as we?ve had throughout the tournament ? very wet,? explained Robinson?s father and Bermuda team manager, Eric Robinson.

After three days of torrential rain, fairways were drenched and bunkers full of water while there was even some doubt the tournament would be completed on Saturday as more rain had been forecast.

?It wasn?t too bad in the morning but in the afternoon the heavens opened again and the back nine was very difficult for the girls,? added Robinson.

But considering the conditions, the local trio played ?very well?, he said.

?Kim shot 83, Ebonie 80 and Laura 78 and for Ebonie and Laura, in particular, this has been a great experience. And I think they and Kim acquitted themselves very well.?

Sweden clinched the title by three shots over the US while Canada ? who topped the leaderboard heading into the final round ? had to settle for third as the Swedes made a surge over the last 18 holes.

Meanwhile, Bermuda?s men?s team, believed to be the youngest ever to represent the Island at a world championships, will compete at the same venue later this week.

Nineteen year-old Jarryd Dillas, Eric West, 20, and Fraser Hunt, 20, all studying in the US, will play the same two courses for the Eisenhower Trophy, starting on Thursday.

All three are currently playing their golf in the USA with Hunt studying at the University of Rhode Island, Dillas attending Columbus State University in Georgia and West at UC Berkeley in California.
