Romaine tipped to take over captaincy

Irving Romaine could be handed the captaincy of Bermuda?s senior national cricket team on their upcoming tour of Trinidad.

The right-handed Bailey?s Bay all-rounder, who scored a maiden international century against Cayman Islands in Toronto last August, was promoted to vice-captain for the Island?s tour of Dubai earlier this month.

However, Romaine could now find himself elevated further up the ranks as regular skipper Clay Smith is still recovering from knee surgery and his deputy Janeiro Tucker, will not accompany Bermuda to coach Gus Logie?s native Trinidad in April.

2005 Athlete of the Year Tucker, due to get married next month, will be overseas on honeymoon when the national squad touch down in the Caribbean.

Bermuda depart for Trinidad on April 9 and return on April 20.

?It?s a possibility that Irving (Romaine) could be given the captaincy. He is a very good candidate and this is something the selection committee will be discussing in the very near future,? said chairman of national team selectors Arnold Manders.

Other possible candidates for the vacated post are senior members Dean Minors and Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock.

While Manders could not provide extensive details of the upcoming Trinidad camp, he did hint that selectors were looking at the possibility of blooding perhaps one or two Under-19 players in a touring entourage that will comprise 16 players, team manager, physiotherapist and coach Logie.

?There are a few players who we are currently looking at to ensure everybody will get a chance before next year?s World Cup so that nobody can say they were never picked,? the former Western Stars and Bermuda skipper added.

?We are looking to try and get a couple of Under-19s to go down with the team. But whether they go or not is difficult to say at the moment due to their school commitments.?

As for the primary purpose of the training camp, Manders, the first player in Cup Match history to score two centuries and only player ever to be dropped on three separate occasions for the classic, explained: ?Our aim is to continue working on the basic techniques in the game and overall team tactics.?

Romaine captained Bay to victory over St.David?s in a memorable Eastern Counties Cup final round clash at Sea Breeze Oval in 2002 before relinquishing the helm to current skipper Jermaine (Manners) Outerbridge.
