Sevens squad lift NY crown

Bermuda?s national sevens rugby team turned up the heat on a trip to the US last weekend, overcoming frigid and windy conditions to lift the New York Sevens title on Randall?s Island.

With temperatures hovering around 40F and the wind chill factor making it feel much cooler, Bermuda adapted remarkably well to win all of their matches.

They sealed overall victory with a crushing 38-7 win over the previously undefeated Buffalo RFC in the final.

Bermuda dominated from the start in that match with Graeme Fergusson rifling a quick pass to a breaking Chris Naylor who drew the defence before popping the ball out wide to Andre Simons who finished off the move from 50 metres out.

The next kick-off saw Hurdle reach up and win the ball in the air leaving Buffalo flat footed. Hurdle ran in to score from 40 metres and at 12-0 ahead Bermuda had still hardly broken sweat.

Nathan Brown split the defence after good possession and ran in from the half to make it 19-0 and Hurdle added another try to extend the points advantage to 26.

With the game beyond doubt, Bermuda coach Alvin Harvey gave promising youngsters Neville Zuill, Harry Andrews and James Bergle a chance to showcase their talent.

And Bermuda continued to dominate with Simon Green taking the score to 31-0 and Bergle finishing off the scoring with a storming run.

Buffalo managed a consolation try in injury time.

Delighted team manager Sean Field-Lament said afterwards: ?It bodes well for the future and this result is definitely something that Bermuda Rugby Football Union can build on.?

The BRFU are currently preparing to send a team to represent Bermuda in the World Cup Sevens qualifying tournament to be held later this year in the Cayman Islands.

Earlier in the tournament, Bermuda thumped hosts New York City Rugby Club 58-0, before defeating a hard-running team from Connecticut, Danbury RFC, 33-0.

A third game saw Bermuda defeat Ottawa 26-10 which earned them a spot in the semi-finals where they had to fight back from a 14-7 half-time deficit for a hard-earned 24-19 victory over Syracuse RFC.Derek Hurdle (captain), Stewart Thomson, Simon Greene, Anthony Cupidore, James Bergle, Graeme Fergusson, Chris Naylor, Nathan Browne, Harry Andrews, Greg Garside, Neville Zuill, Andre Simons, Alvin Harvey (coach), Sean Field-Lament (manager), Maureen Ryan (physio).
