Sherratt goes down fighting

Tommy Sherratt did what no Bermudian before him has been able to do in taking a game off Gary Plumstead. But that was as good as it got in the Division One final of the World Distributors Charity Squash Tournament.

After losing the opening game 9-6, Sherratt fought back in the second and came out on top 10-8 to level the match.

However, that stung pre-match favourite Plumstead into action and he took the next two games, 9-2, 9-4, to take the title at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association Devonshire courts.

"With the match tied, Tommy just seemed to run out of legs and Gary's experience showed through and he won the last two games fairly comfortably," said Bermuda's director of squash Ross Triffitt.

"However, the result was very encouraging for Tommy's preparation for the World Championships and Senior Caribbean Championships coming up later in the year."

The event, which featured matches in a whole host of divisions, raised more than $2,400 for the Bermuda Diabetes Association.

"The majority of that money was raised by the juniors who were competing in the event seeking sponsorship for their entry fee," said Triffit.

There was a special incentive for the junior that raised the most money - a trip to Philadelphia to take part in a squash camp held by coach Dominic Hughes, a former professional in Bermuda.

That was won by Laura Robinson who raised $217.

It was a great weekend for Robinson who won the Special Plate in the Ladies Division One category. The only player she lost to was the eventual winner, Liz Martin. She also made the final of the junior event before losing to Robert Maycock.

Meanwhile, James Stout has finished 21st in the German Junior Open out of 32 competitors.

Stout, currently being trained in Belgium by World Champion David Palmer's coach, Shaun Moxham, was unseeded in the event. He lost his first match 3-1, his second in five games and won the rest to achieve his finish.

"The most important event for him is the Dutch Junior Open in July just before he comes back," said Triffitt. "Hopefully, this will boost his ranking slightly and help get him a better seeding."
