Shrubb and Robinson take Caribbean titles

After eight years of trying, Michael Shrubb finally claimed a Caribbean title this week, taking the Under 19 trophy at the Junior CASA in Trinidad.

And Laura Robinson, like Shrubb an Island Games competitor earlier this month, made it two for Bermuda, taking the Under 17 title after finishing as runner-up at Under 15 and 13 in previous years.

The individual victories matched last year?s two wins in the annual event in which Island pros Nick Kyme and James Stout claimed six titles between them as juniors.

Shrubb beat David Patterson of Jamaica 9-4, 9-6, 9-4 in the final to claim the senior prize at the event being staged at the Cascadia Club in St. Ann?s, Port-of-Spain while Robinson also claimed her title against a Jamaican, beating Kristine Bell 9-3, 9-3, 9-7.

Chris Stout, younger brother of professional and Bermuda?s number two James, was beaten in a thrilling final in the Under 13 competition, going down 3-9, 6-9, 10-8, 9-5, 3-9 to Kale Wilson of Trinidad, a player almost twice his size.

Robert Maycock (Under 17) and Andrew Stout (Under 19) were beaten in their third/fourth play-off matches with Stout, also brother of James, unlucky not to have made his final after holding match points in his semi-final.

?It has been an excellent day for us,? said Ross Triffitt, head coach for Bermuda?s team and the Island?s director of squash.

?It?s always good to win titles and it is promising to see Laura win one ? we don?t tend to do so well in the girls? events.

?Michael did very well and young Chris Stout was unlucky in his game against a much bigger opponent.

?And of course it bodes well for the future of the sport in Bermuda when we do well at this level.?

The team event starts today, although Bermuda?s medal chances are somewhat diminished due to the size of the team, depleted immediately before the event by some 11th hour injuries.

?It?s going to be tough for us,? added Triffit.

?But we do have some strong players so it is just a case of how we get on in the various match-ups. There might be a chance of a medal in the boys? event.?
