Sims to ?give back? to BJGA

Bermuda?s Nationwide Tour pro Michael Sims will be on hand at a ?Junior Golf Outing? being hosted by Belmont Hills next weekend to give pointers to some of the Island?s up and coming players.

Sanctioned by Bermuda Junior Golf Association, the event will see Sims offering tips and instruction with special emphasis to be placed on short game techniques, golf rules and etiquette.

The event, to be held on Saturday, December 30, beginning at 11 a.m., will also see Sims offering an array of trick shots.

?I think this is the ultimate compliment . . . to be able to give something back to the programme,? Sims told

?It definitely helped me in the beginning stages to develop passion for the game, and now I get the opportunity to give back.

?I can?t really think of a better way, and I?m really grateful that I?m able to do something like this. And I can?t wait because there?s nothing like having all of the juniors come out and also the public come out to support the event. And we?ll have fun with it, that?s for sure.?

Sims, 27, grabbed local headlines earlier this month when he became the first Bermudian golfer to advance to the lucrative Nationwide Tour after six pressure-packed qualifying rounds at the PGA Tour Q School in La Quinta, California.

The Southampton resident returned home earlier this week to a hero?s welcome.

?Everybody is very happy and excited because I?m back home we all get to hang out with each other a bit,? Sims said.

?So it?s very nice to be back home.?

Event organiser Kim Botelho added: ?Michael (Sims) is a product of the Bermuda Junior Golf programme who sets a great example to all young Bermudians about setting goals and working hard to achieve them.

?By recently qualifying for the Nationwide Tour, Michael is now one step closer to reaching his ultimate goal of playing on the most prestigious golf tour in the world ? the PGA Tour.?

Sims is set to make his Tour debut at the $550,000 Movistar Panama Championships at the 6,937-yard, par-70 Panama Golf Club in Panama, starting on January 24, 2007, where the eventual winner will pocket $99,000.

The field of 132 players for next month?s event that will be televised on The Golf Channel will feature as many as 27 former PGA Tour winners, including six-time winner Steve Pate and four-time winners Chip Beck, Notah Begay III and David Edwards.

?Through his hard work to get to the Nationwide Tour, Michael has taken to heart the life lessons that he learned whilst part of the Bermuda Junior Golf programme,? Botelho added.

?He feels a kinship to all young Bermudian golfers that not only love the sport and aspire to become great golfers, but more importantly, to work hard and develop into great people for Bermuda.

?And Belmont Hills Golf Club is proud to be a part of the Bermuda Junior Golf Association where both organisations strive to promote the sport of golf among the young people of these Islands.

?The Bermuda Junior Golf Association is dedicated, through the game of golf, to teaching young people the life values of sportsmanship, honesty, self-discipline, integrity and competitive spirit.?
