Skater Caisey aiming high

The May 24 race winner and president of the In-Line Skating association is eager to attract more competitors to the sport.

After obliterating the field during the recent Heritage Day In-Line skating race, Taur Caisey wants to take it to the "max" and represent the Island on the world stage.

Caisey, who has already savoured life in the fast lane in the US, hopes to fly the banner for Bermuda during major overseas races in the next couple of years.

But for now the current president of the In-Line Skating Association wants to concentrate solely on catapulting the sport into the limelight, encouraging others to join ranks and come along for the ride.

"There isn't much happening here at the moment other than for May 24 and being that I have just taken over the association I hope to really big this thing up," said Caisey. "But my thing right now is to train others and get the guys to compete overseas.

"I would also like to organise more races and perhaps even invite skaters in from the US, Canada and Europe and get the people to see what in-line skating is really all about."

Last year Caisey competed on the US circuit where he said he gave a good account of himself against some of the world's premier skaters.

"I skated with some big boys and it was nice," he added. "My finish wasn't the best but I finished just behind them. They did a surprise jump on me and I wasn't expecting it, but it was good.

"It's really a great sport and I don't see why a lot more Bermudians don't get involved. Once you start doing it and you see the numbers, it's beautiful.

"It's good exercise and it is also really enjoyable. It often makes me wonder why there aren't more locals skating or why those that have skates don't use them anymore. It's my goal to really promote this thing this year and try to get more people involved."
