Smith is well placed to retain Goodwill title

American Keir Smith has put himself in an excellent position to retain the professional Goodwill title after posting a superb 22 Stableford points at Mid Ocean yesterday.

The long-time Bermuda visitor now boasts a three-day total of 64 points, four clear of another familiar name Ian Doig, and five up of recently-crowned Bermuda Open champion Tim Conley.

Smith won last year?s event in a thrilling four-way play-off to take the $9,000 first prize.

Belmont Hills? Brian Morris and Tucker?s Point?s Andrew Trott are the top-ranked Bermudian pros, finding themselves in a tie for 15th place on 50 Stableford points.

In the senior pro division, Jerry Bruner of Montebello Country Club maintained his lead after totalling 16 points at Belmont Hills. Bruner?s three-day total of 61 leads second-placed professionals Adam Brown of The National Golf Club, who has a three-day total of 54, and third-placed Bob Bilbo of Manor Country Club who posted a three-day total of 49.

This year the Goodwill has attracted a massive 115 teams, the highest since 1984 ? with the state of play in the team competition a reflection of the high standard of golf being played.

In the main net division, Spring Brook Country Club vaulted into first place yesterday with a 40-under par three-day total while Rosedale ? led by professional Michael Sherman and playing partners Jim Reid, Lonnie Brown and John Barford ? are in second with a three-day total of 35 under par.

Two Bermudian clubs are also doing fairly well this week with the Fairmont Southampton Golf Club ? led by pro Cornell Bean along with playing partners Levy Rodriquez, Paul Hayward and Nitin Aggarwal tied for 11th place on 27-under together with Belmont Hills represented by pro Morris, David Hopper, Morris Simons and Mike Shaw.

The net team senior division has Montebello as its top-ranked club also moved a three-day total of 30-under par. Manor Country Club are second on 20-under par.

In the gross team main division, meanwhile, Winding Brook Country Club, led by professional Philip Kaminski and playing partners Jack Kaminski, James Welch and Roger Gans moved into first place with a total of 21-under par.

Magna Golf Club with pro Danny King and team-mates Rocky Pantalone, Carmin Giovenazzo and Martin Douglas, as well as Spring Brooke Country Club, including pro George Deitz and Steve Boyd, Mark Olenowski and John Fullam are tied for second at 18-under.

Elsewhere, in the gross team senior division, Montebello Golf Club continue to hold their lead with European Senior Tour player Jerry Bruner leading the way along with Michael De La Hunty and Eddy Marshal ? ultimately posting a 15-under par total after three rounds.

Bethesda Country Club pro Jim Folks and amateur partners Don Tomasso, Matt Sughrue and Jack Hargett along with the A team of Salt Lake Country Club boasting professional Ron Branca, Neil Henderson, Jay Gamble and Chuck Culp are tied in second place with 12-under par.

Yesterday?s play also witnessed the five-round tournament?s first hole-in-one of the week, as Andy Froude of Charles River Golf club knocked it straight in on the par-three eighth at Port Royal.
