Smiths combine to keep Town on top
Dandy Town 2 North Village 1
The dynamic Smith-and-Smith combination ? Khano and Carlos ? spearheaded Dandy Town?s dismantling of defending champions North Village with a 2-1 triumph at St. John?s Road yesterday.
Two pieces of brilliance between these team-mates ? within a nine-minute period of the second half ? were enough to seal the points for the home side as Town maintained their place atop the Premier League standings.
It was Khano who hit the back of net on both occasions but Carlos could justifiably delight in either strike as he delivered two superb lobs from midfield to his colleague out on the left flank, almost half-way in Village?s half.
In the first instance, Khano calmly chipped the ball over oncoming goalie Zane Hendrickson, ran past him and headed the missile to its destiny. The crowd went wild at such magical skill as Khano flung his arms wide in jubilation.
That was 1-0 in the 66th minute and by the 75th minute the speedy striker had doubled his and Town?s account.
This time, Khano gently brought Carlos? precise pass down to the turf with a soft first touch before advancing with a few quick paces and drilling a vicious left-footer into the bottom net. Hendrickson was beaten to his right before he even moved.
The outburst from Town fans was deafening as 22-year-old Khano was engulfed by team-mates.
Village?s entourage looked stunned and perhaps understandably so. After all, defeat is unfamiliar territory for the team that have ruled football?s top flight for the past two seasons.
The effect of Town?s dominance was really underlined when, in the match?s dying minutes, Ralph Bean Jr pulled a goal back for the visitors but there was little reaction from the red-and-white pockets of supporters.
He tucked the ball home from point-blank range with two minutes left after Kentoine Jennings headed a corner kick back across the goalmouth.
Town were in the ascendancy from the start but were unable to put away any of their first-half chances, the best being a shot from Seyoum Tuzo ? who blazed through the midfield ? which ricocheted off the top part of the left upright.
Village posed no serious threat but would have been happy that, despite Town having the better of the action, they went to the break on even terms. The second half proved an entirely different matter though.
Quietly pleased, Town?s coach Devarr Boyles said his boys concentrated on ?doing the basics well?.
?They were very focused. They?re looking forward to these games. In the past we?ve fallen down at various stages and become unstuck in games but today we showed resilience right through,? he noted.
Of the Smith tandem, he applauded Carlos and Khano as ?big-time players? both of whom were ?instrumental in our play?.
?Carlos gave some great outlet balls. I know he would probably like to contribute with a goal of his own but with the change in tactics his role was to be the provider.?
Boyles? opposite number, Scott Morton, also saluted the host team?s superiority.
?Town came prepared to play and they deserved the outright victory. I have to give a lot of credit to Town. We will learn from this,? said Village?s coach.
Two-goal hero Smith revelled in his performance but sent an ominous warning to opponents, saying ?but I can still play better?.
He too complimented his namesake, Carlos, for some ?great balls?.
?The type I like,? he declared.
