Social Club to wield the axe

A number of Social Club players who are being blamed for the First Division team's withdrawal from competitive soccer could be officially axed by the club next week.

Team official Fred (Pinks) Lewis confirmed that the club was making progress towards settling the matter and noted that he personally would be going to Bermuda Football Association soon to collect the players' release forms.

"I have already contacted the BFA but there were no forms available, but I understand that they were expecting them shortly and when we are in possession of these forms then we can go ahead and give these unwanted players their releases," said Lewis.

The Hamilton-based club were forced to suspend their programme after several players in the squad repeatedly showed a lack of interest and commitment, a situation that culminated in Social Club's 20-0 humiliation at the hands of Somerset Trojans.

The performance and general attitude of the players was so discouraging to team officials that they decided that it was best for the the team to withdraw from the First Division and plan on returning with a carefully organised programme next year.

At the time Lewis vowed that they would be back with a vengeance after the club had "weeded out" the unwanted players.

Lewis was this week unable to estimate how many players would be asked to leave, noting that the coaches had compiled a list which he had not yet seen.

"I have just come back from a vacation and I don't have any numbers right now, but I know our coaches have prepared a list. I can assure everybody that we intend to move on and give these players their releases to get them unattached from our club, that's something which is a priority," said Lewis.

"It's no secret that we want to sever ties with them as soon as possible. If the BFA want them to play with another club then they can let them play and if they don't then that's fine with us.

"The truth of the matter is that they (the players) are just going to be headaches to other people. I always try to tell clubs that when a new player joins them they should talk to the previous coach about the new player."

"But too many clubs just think that if the new player is pretty good they will take him," he added.

"The clubs getting the new player don't realise that the old club could be willing to get rid of them because of their behaviour. The sad thing is that we in Bermuda thrive too much on winning and not trying to promote the game and teaching the players the game, that's why we have gone back so far."

Lewis and his coaching team say they are committed to regrouping and will retain the majority of players originally signed up for this season.

In order to keep those players interested Social Club will arrange a series of friendly matches during the rest of the season.
