Spring Brook close in on title

Tucker's Point Golf Club's Keir Smith.

Spring Brook Country Club are on course for the overall team net title at this year?s 54th annual Goodwill Golf Championships after firing a sizzling 12-under-par 59 yesterday at Mid Ocean Club, considered one of the toughest of the five courses being played in this week?s 90-hole tournament.

Their nearest rivals, Rosedale Golf Club, remain six shots back after they too shot 12-under-par 58 at the par-70 Belmont Hills.

And with just one round remaining today, when Spring Brook will play at Tucker?s Point, American pro George Deitz and his team of amateurs will be favoured to hold on.

?We?ve played pretty well as a team and had a great day at Mid Ocean which was in good condition. The greens were great and there was no wind. We thought it would be more of an advantage to be on one of the other courses. But as it turned out we made so many birdies,? stated Deitz who shot a one-over-par 72 on his own ball.

?In the end Mid Ocean was a good place to be and we managed to hold it together today. We just kept grinding along and hopefully we can continue doing so for one more day.?

Lying in third, meanwhile, are Lookout Point (237) whose 13-under-par 58 was the lowest round at Port Royal yesterday.

At Belmont Hills, Winding Brook Country Club maintained their grip on the gross division lead after firing a four-under-par 66 to go to 25-under for the tournament, two shots better than second-placed Spring Brook (259) and five ahead of third-placed Carnegie Abbey (261) who both enjoyed solid rounds of 66 and 67 at Mid Ocean and Tucker?s Point respectively.

Competition is also close in the Senior net division where Belfair Golf Club (243) hold a two-shot lead over Bear Hill Golf Club (245) and a four-shot advantage over Montebello (247) and Sharon Country Club (247) who remain in a two-way tie for third at 35-under for the tournament.

Pacesetters Belfair shot a ten-under 61 at Port Royal while Bear Hill carded a nine-under-par 61 at Riddell?s Bay.

In the Senior gross division The Country Club of Salt Lake (267) fired 68 at Port Royal to hold a slim one-shot lead over second-placed Montebello (268) who returned a one-over-par 72 at Mid Ocean.

Just two shots adrift are Bethesda Country Club (269) who came in at one-under also at Mid Ocean yesterday, while fourth-placed Belfair Golf Club (271) remained in the hunt at 11-under for the tournament after shooting a one-under-par 70 at Port Royal.

Canadian Keir Smith continues to lead the Pro Division individual stableford tournament by two points over Michael Sherman and six over Bermuda Open champion Tim Conley.

Defending champion Smith, who clinched last year?s event in a thrilling four-way play-off to lay claim to the $9,000 first prize, collected 18 points at Tucker?s Point to take his four-day tally to 82.

?I?m swinging well and love playing golf on the Island and my partners have been fantastic,? Smith told .

?We continue to have fun and I think what has been helping me is that I?m making some good putts and good swings and staying in the moment.?

Smith?s nearest rival, Sherman, accumulated 22 points, the best round of the day among the pros.

Third-placed Conley managed to pick up 17 points to keep his own hopes intact, unlike Canada?s Ian Doig who fell 11 back after collecting just 13 points at Mid Ocean to remain in sixth place.

European Senior Tour player Jerry Bruner ? first round leader at last week?s Gosling?s Invitational at Belmont Hills ? holds a comfortable seven-point lead over Adam Brown among the senior pros.

Bruner (77) earned 16 points at Mid Ocean yesterday, Brown (70) 16 points at Tucker?s Point and third-placed Ron Branca (66) 17 points at Port Royal to remain a distant 11 back.

Belmont Hills (247) continue to lead the team net division among the local field. They sit in 15th position after carding a seven-under 63 at Port Royal.

Fairmont Southampton (248) remain in 16th and Riddell?s Bay (250) in a four -way tie for 25th spot.

UBP Senator and former European Tour player Kim Swan (60) leads the local pros with Southampton Princess pro Cornell Bean (59) just one shot adrift in 34th position overall.
