Squash stars ready to do battle
The squash world?s numbers four and six clash tonight in an exhibition match with an edge.
Island resident David Palmer and Jonathon Power will battle it out in the Docksiders World Class Exhibition at 7.30 p.m. to mark the culmination of a hectic two weeks at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association headquarters in Devonshire.
The coaches of the two former world champions, Shaun Moxham and Mike Way, have been helping out with an international junior squash camp, while Palmer and Power have been training for the start of the international tour.
The two players ? who met in the game of the year in the semi-final of the Bermuda Open in March ? look set to go head to head in the quarter-finals of the Cathay Pacific Open in Hong Kong next month, giving tonight?s match some extra bite.
?This is an excellent chance to get some practice in against another top player,? said Power, who suffered a suspected broken bone in his left leg after March?s 103-minute marathon which Palmer won 3-2.
?In Canada, where I am based, it is hard to find people to train with, so making the short trip down to Bermuda to practice against someone like Dave Palmer is perfect for me.
?It?s a great way to warm-up for the season.?
This is the third trip to Bermuda for Power ? known as the wild man of squash for his on and off-court antics ? who played here in an exhibition tournament 13 years ago as well as his trip here earlier in the year.
And, like so many others who played here in the $55,000 tournament in March, he is impressed with what Bermuda is doing to earn its place as squash?s new Mecca.
?This year?s tournament was fantastic,? he added.
?For a first-time event, it could not have been organised any better. Everyone really enjoyed it and this will be a great place to have the PSA Masters next year ? they will more than do it justice.?
