St. David's' unbeaten season last year is fast becoming a distant memory.

The new campaign is just a few weeks' old and already the east enders have suffered two losses, their first coming against Southampton Rangers in the Premier Division last week and their second at Lord's on Saturday where they were dumped out of the Combined League Knockout.

Not even the surprise appearance of player-coach Clay Smith - just two weeks away from knee surgery - was sufficient to inspire the home team whose batting failed miserably.

Even the normally prolific Glenn Blakeney couldn't prevent the Islanders from falling to a five-wicket defeat as he was dismissed for a paltry six.

Smith, though, was among just three who reached double figures with a score of 19, the others being openers Sammy Robinson (31) and Phillip Pitcher (45).

The openers got St. David's off to a rousing start as they put on 68, but once Pitcher fell to Saleem Mukudem, wickets began to tumble at a rapid rate.

The end came for St. David's after 42 overs.

Mukudem continued his mastery over local batsmen with a haul of three for 21 off just six overs. Gershon Gibbons took three for 39 off 10 overs and Hasan Durham two for 14 off eight.

Some fierce strokeplay by opener Jermaine Postlethwaite and veteran Arnold Manders helped Stars reach the target off 44 overs, Postlethwaite finishing with 48 (eight fours and a six) and Manders not out on 49 (three fours and four sixes).

Stars had some concern early on when young opener Treadwell Gibbons Jr. (0), Gershon Gibbons (nine) and skipper Albert Steede (six) were out with the total on 58, but thanks to Postlethwaite and Manders they quickly assumed command.

Delyone Borden was the most successful bowler for St. David's with three for 24.

St. George's 326-9, Warwick 270

Number eight bat Herbie Bascome hammered 105 and veteran Charlie Marshall struck 64 to lead St. George's to a 56-run victory over Warwick at Wellington Oval.

Bascome tore the bowling attack apart, hitting out relentlessly after Warwick had snatched six wickets. He struck five sixes and 14 fours, reaching his century off 69 balls while batting for 120 minutes.

Bascome played the dominant role after St. George's had slipped to 167 for six following Marshall's dismissal. Bascome and Greg Foggo (19) added 131 for the ninth wicket.

Others among the runs were Michael Paynter (23), Ricky Hodsoll (19) and Detroy Smith 16. Robbie Richardson led the Warwick bowlers with four for 44.

Veteran player-coach Allan Douglas Snr. led Warwick in reply with a brisk 60, pushing them over the double century mark after going to the crease with the score on 142 for seven.

Douglas struck five fours and three sixes and was finally out with the score on 231.

Piran Mendes earlier lashed 54 with five fours and three sixes while Lamar Caines finished unbeaten on 28.

Foggo led the St. George's attack with three for 37 off 10 overs while Kameron Fox had two for 45 off 10.
