St. George's pin hopes on their bowling attack

Early indications suggest champions St.George's are pinning their hopes for success in next week's annual Cup Match classic on a solid bowling attack.

And with an impressive pool in which to choose from, there's certainly no shortage of prospects to call upon in an effort to dismiss champions Somerset twice at Wellington Oval.

At present, St.George's have the likes of Kameron Fox, Delyone Borden, Lionel Cann, Mackie Crane, Wilbur Burt, Hari Rawat, Clarkie Trott along with club stalwarts Herbie Bascome and Gregg Foggo - who has bagged 28 victims thus far - all vying to take on the seam bowling duties.

There is also no shortage in the spin bowling department as Peter Philpott, Travis Smith, teenager Jade Foggo and veteran Eugene (Calabash) Foggo have all thrown their hats into the ring.

St.George's also haven't ruled out the possibility of recalling medium pacer Ryan Steede who is currently overseas playing for Atherstone Cricket Club in England. If all goes according to plan, the towering player could make a speedy return home in time for tomorrow's final trial match at the Oval which has undergone extensive restoration work over the past seven months.

"He has paid his dues but he hasn't been picked for the last trial match. However, he is supposed to come and there isn't anything in written to say that he can't be included at the 11th hour," confirmed a St.George's Cricket Club spokesperson.

Meanwhile, club player Mark (Beaver) Ray is fighting to retain his place on the team. Ray has missed most of the season largely due to increasing work commitments. However, he has attended practice sessions throughout.

The talented all-rounder, who scored an unbeaten century (103) during the 1998 classic at Somerset Cricket Club, has been named in the vice-president's XI for tomorrow's trial match which gets underway at 9 a.m. at Wellington Oval.
