St. George's took full advantage of the conditions at St. David's to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 1995, winning this east end derby by a comfortable margin.

The difference between the sides was how their goalkeepers handled the conditions, with Troy Hall's experience showing in the St. George's goal while Sidney Minors at the opposite end endured a nightmare afternoon and was eventually substituted.

And to add insult to injury, promotion-chasing St. David's also finished the match without two of their better players, Otis Minors and Dejuan Paynter, after referee Anthony Mouchette issued three red cards two minutes from the end following an altercation.

A match between fierce rivals had been played in good spirits throughout, the tempo set in the first minute when Hall kicked a ball out of touch to allow Desmond Crockwell to receive treatment for an injury.

The best of the early chances for each team came within seconds of each other in the 19th minute when, first, Herbie Bascome's free kick from 35 yards smashed against the crossbar. The break upfield by St. David's saw Paynter spot Hall off his line but his lob was too high.

A heavy downpour midway through the half changed the conditions as the ground became slick. And the wet surface played a part in the opening goal in the 44th minute when a ball into the St. David's penalty area stopped in a puddle as Minors advanced off his line.

Players around the ball were all wrong-footed, including St. George's midfielder Ernest Signor who recovered the quickest and got a boot to the ball to steer it into an empty net.

St. David's had the luxury of coming back out at the start of the second half in changed gear, but their fortunes did not change as they were hit by a three-goal burst in five minutes.

Goalkeeper Minors was again put off by a ball that stopped in a puddle inside his box in the 48th minute and this time Sinclair Gibbons, returning from injury, drove it into an open net.

Substitute Worrell Bean brought off a good save from Hall at the other end two minutes later after cutting in on the left, but St. George's went right upfield and scored their third within seconds. This time an attempted clearance by a St. David's defence went straight up in the air and the unchallenged Gibbons was allowed a free volley which found the back of the net from 15 yards.

For all intents and purposes St. David's were a beaten bunch after that goal but St. George's player-coach Neil Paynter r wasn't taking any chances and when a penalty was conceded by Minors in the 53rd minute he decided against allowing Gibbons the opportunity to complete his hat-trick.

Yusef Pitt was pulled back by Minors inside the box after the 'keeper missed his attempted clearance. Minors was blown down and received a yellow card. Paynter took the penalty himself and planted his effort to Minors' right to make it 4-0.

Minors was replaced two minutes later as new signing Richard Campbell came on. He, too, was beaten when Pitt scored the best goal of the match in the 63rd minute.

The striker beat two defenders on the right side, got inside the box and as Campbell anticipated a cross, he left enough of an opening at his near post for Pitt to squeeze the ball through from an acute angle .

Cards dominated the last half hour of the game with Dejuan Paynter booked for interfering with Hall's kick upfield and then Derek Wright was cautioned two minutes later for a reckless challenge on the same St. David's player. Tempers flared two minutes from the end when Minors retaliated to a challenge from Ernest Signor who punched Minors. Mouchette restored calm as both players were sent off but before play had resumed Paynter got involved in an incident and received his second booking.
