Still bidding for Games
A multimedia presentation ? including an appearance from Michael Douglas ? will be shown to Island Games members in July as Bermuda continues to bid for the 2011 games.
Despite the Island Games Association executive backing the rival Isle of Wight bid earlier this week, Bermuda Island Games chairman Jon Beard is confident the membership will go against that decision at the Rhodes AGM.
The 25 members will get their chance to have a final say and Beard is confident, as it has been on the last two occasions, the executive?s recommendation will be ignored.
?We have already had some support from other Islands,? said Beard, who claimed some of the comments from the executive in making their recommendation were ?misguided?.
?They talked about the high costs, but other Islands are not all that cheap either, and the lack of support appears to be a misguided statement.
?They also mentioned the mid-August date, but there is nothing we can do about that.
?I know from their inspection visit that they enjoyed Bermuda and we are happy that we can convince the other members to go with our bid.
?This, for us, is no more than a hiccup and we will continue to vigorously promote our bid.?
The marketing campaign will continue until the July 8 meeting ? which will see each member cast their two votes plus one each from the six executive members ? and then a formal presentation will be made, which includes a brief foreword from celebrity resident Douglas, who also backed Bermuda?s bid to host game for next year?s cricket World Cup.
Bermuda has been involved in the last two Island Games, winning plenty of medals at both, and are set to compete in Rhodes next summer.
