Stout is crowned national champion

James Stout captured the Bermuda Under 19 Squash championship as he cruised through four matches without dropping a game.

James Stout was crowned Bermuda's National Boys Under-19 squash champion after beating off four rivals without losing a game.

Stout, who attends school in England, was the number one seed in his division and has represented Bermuda at the Rosebowl Championships. He is the current Caribbean Under-17 champion.

To win his latest title at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association club on Middle Road, Devonshire he had to overcome the challenges of Michael Shrubb, Stephen Smith, Andrew Robinson and Justin Robinson in the round-robin tournament.

Having secured the top spot Stout hopes to come back to Bermuda at the end of his schooling to challenge Island professional Gary Plumstead and Bermuda's top player Nick Kyme.

After playing in both the Under-13 and Under-11 divisions Jeffrey Olson and Jeffrey Counsell played their way into the finals of the Under-11 division.

Olson beat Nicholas Brewer 3-0 and Counsell beat Christopher Stout 3-0 in the semi-finals.

In the final Olson proved too strong for Counsell and emerged the clear victor winning 3-0 (9-4, 9-3, 9-4). Counsell finished ninth in the Under-13 division and Olson sixth.

Pre-tournament favourite Robert Maycock won the Under-13 division beating Alistair Melvin 3-0 (9-4, 9-1, 9-6). Maycock, a rising star on the Island, finished fourth in the Under-15 division as well. Gary Furtado beat Michael Jones 3-0 to finish third.

With last year's Under 13 winner Andrew Stout taking the first game it looked like there might be an upset in the Under-15 division. However, top seed Michael Smith regained his composure in the second game and took control losing only seven more points on his way to victory.

With many of the players playing in more than one division the effects of five matches a day were beginning to show. Stout played in both the Under-15 and Under-17 divisions and finished runner-up in the latter.

The Robinsons took the honour for the most wins for one family. Andrew Robinson played in both the Under-17 and Under-19 division. Against Andrew Stout in the final he won 3-0 (9-4, 9-2, 9-0).

After losing to Stephen Smith 3-2, Robinson then went on to beat his namesake Justin and Michael Shrubb to finish third in the Boys Under-19 division.

Sister Laura Robinson now had to match her brother's achievements.

Without dropping a single game in the entire tournament she duly did so being crowned Under-13 and Under-17 girls champion.

She beat Katherine Moore in the Under-13 Division and Anna Forbes in the Under-17.

In the girls Under-11 division sisters Kelly and Rachel Barnes found themselves facing each other in the final.

Older sister Kelly outclassed her younger sibling and then went on to finish runner-up in the Under-15 division.

Morgan Lightbourne won the division with ease and then finished third in the Under-17 division.

With the tournament over the juniors are looking forward to the start of the new squash season which begins on Monday.
