Stuttering start for Sims
Michael Sims' quest to be among the front-runners in the second stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament (Q-School) started badly yesterday when he could manage only a three-over-par 75 in the first round of the 72-hole tournament.
Playing at the par-72 Deerwood Club course in Kingwood, Texas, the Bermudian found himself at the end of the day nine shots behind early leader and former Tour regular Bill Glasson who carded an impressive 66.
However, the rookie pro, who is among 77 golfers vying for a place in the final stage of the tough qualifying event, was just four shots behind the 20th placed player.
Sims has to finish among the low 20 scores or ties to advance to Q-School's final stage.
Last year, the 23-year-old was eliminated at the same second stage of the one-off chance to get playing privileges on the PGA and Buy.Com Tours.
"He said he played well he just didn't make the putts. He's okay," Sims' father Bruce told The Royal Gazette last night after speaking with his son.
Sims, who recently qualified to compete on the South American Tour, advanced to the second stage of Q School by tying for eighth place in last month's first stage. He carded a five-under 283 at Cypresswood Country Club in Texas.
