Suspend the lot of them!

Just days after PHC and Devonshire Colts were involved in an shameful fracas at the Martonmere Cup final, the two Premier Division adversaries were drawn against each other in the first round of the FA Cup.

Yesterday's draw came as Sports Minister Randy Horton condemned the events at Wellington Oval on Monday and called for all those involved in the bench clearing incident to be suspended by the Bermuda Football Association.

As the match, witnessed by Bermuda's Premier Jennifer Smith, reached its climax there ensued a mass pushing and shoving incident sparked by an altercation between Colts' MaKonnen Hollis and Zebras' Raynell ‘Manga' Lightbourne.

Police entered the field of play but were not needed as the trouble subsided before they could reach the scene. In the aftermath, referee Lyndon Raynor sent off both instigators and they joined PHC's Stephen Astwood and Colts' Jermel Belboda - sent off in the first half - for an early bath. Colts went on to win the match 2-1.

The ugly scenes came just a week or so after the BFA and Government pledged a crackdown on violence at football matches - albeit aimed primarily at fans and not players.

However, Minister Horton, who was also at Monday's game, believes there should be no distinction between those in the stands and those on the pitch when it comes to taking action.

“I think that everyone who left those benches should be suspended,” he said. “It's just totally unacceptable that people would leave the bench and race onto the pitch.

“Two players in the middle of the pitch having a little bit of a spat - those sorts of things sometimes occur in the flow of a game as one might say, but to see both benches come off in the manner in which they did was totally disturbing.”

Horton said team officials had to set an example to both their players and spectators.

“Coaches in particular have to set standards and when we see stuff like this happen it just sets a bad example for the young people watching,” said Horton, urging BFA officials to act swiftly to deal with those involved.

“As far as I'm concerned you don't even need a referee's report because all of the BFA officials were sitting up there on the balcony and saw what happened. I saw both benches clear and these people need to be dealt with swiftly.”

If Horton's call is heeded by the BFA hierarchy it could mean two interesting team sheets when Colts and PHC run out on Sunday, November 24 at White Hill Field.

That tie is without doubt the pick of the round, but there are a number of other match-ups of interest.

On the same date and at the same venue Somerset Bridge take on Vasco Mariners while at BAA Field, Commercial A Division rivals BAA and Prison Officers square off.

At Prospect, Prospect-Fire take on Southampton Rangers while at Malabar, Ireland Rangers and Valley FC go head to head.

Hamilton Parish take on St. George's at St. David's, while Key West Rangers battle Lobster Pot at St. Johns.

On December 1 Robin Hood and Wolves clash at Bernard's Park as do North Village and Tuff Dogs.

At Devonshire Rec. Bermuda Pest Control take on Paget and Devonshire Cougars entertain Young Mens Social Club.

Boulevard and Dandy Town have been drawn together at BAA Field, while Somerset tackle St. David's at Somerset Cricket Club. The final tie pits St. George's All-Stars and Prospect at Wellington Oval. MR Onions have a bye.

In the first round of the Women's FA Cup, which takes place on November 24, Hemisphere Royals take on Rude Girls at BAA and Prospect and Robin Hood Hurricanes play at Prospect. Both Dandy Stars and PHC have a bye.
