Youth triumphed over experience yesterday when teenager Geoffrey Smith took the AON National Sprint Triathlon title at Clearwater Beach.
Smith, who ran in the 13-15 year-old division, beat out Riann Naude for first place. Jamie Pedro came home third.
Smith had fallen some distance behind the leaders during the swim and bike phases of the event but gradually hauled his way back into contention on the run to take line honours in 1:08:05.
Naude finished in 1:08:34 and Pedro in 1:09:56.
In the women's event, Karen Smith scored a predictable win, beating out last year's champion Flora Duffy.
Smith, who finished seventh overall, clocked 1:11:22 and Duffy, 18th overall, 1:17:22.
