Tennis juniors up against world elite

Young tennis talents David Thomas, Niem Azaar and Ashley Brooks will have an opportunity to take on some of the world's best junior players over the next week as the fourth Bank of Bermuda Foundation ITF world ranking tournament gets underway.

An estimated 61 overseas players are scheduled to arrive for the annual event to be held at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium from tomorrow, with the main draw games beginning on Monday.

The tournament is part of the ITF summer circuit, a collection of junior tournaments which allow the world's best young players to accumulate points in order to qualify for major junior events such as the US Open and Wimbledon.

In the boys' under-18 draw, Thomas ? who will have just returned from his Davis Cup debut in El Salvador in time ? has been given a wildcard and therefore does not have to qualify.

Azar is in a similar position, having built up enough ranking points playing in other ITF junior events in the US.

In the girls' competition, meanwhile, Brooks, singles finalist in this week's Island Construction Open at Pomander Gate, and Megan Lightbourne will be the leading lights of a nine-strong Bermuda contingent.

Bermuda number one Andy Bray will defend his title against Jacob Trott in the Men's A Singles Final of the Island Construction Open at Pomander Gate today.

The number one seed advanced to the final thanks to a straight sets victory over newcomer Yves Doyon, 6-0, 6-2 while Trott upset number two seed David Jenkins 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

However, Jenkins got his revenge against Trott in the semi-final of the Men's A doubles when he teamed up with Bray to oust Samitha Ranaweera and Trott 6-2, 6-3.

In the other semi-final, the veteran pair of Roger Marshall and Sam Maybury defeated Larry Samuels and Eugene Simmons 6-2, 6-0.

Ashley Brooks will have a busy weekend as she appears in a total of three finals.

In the Ladies' A singles semi-final, Brooks defeated the up and coming junior Cayla Cross 6-2, 6-1 while her opponent in the final, Elizabeth Hartley, had an easy time in her semi, beating Shade Subair 6-0, 6-0.

In the Ladies' A doubles, number one seeds Brooks and partner Lavern Stowe will face the number two seeds Dedee Cooper and Jill Finnigan.

The mixed doubles final will again see the number one seeds versus the number two seeds: Ashley Brooks and Jacob Trott against Lavern Stowe and Roger Marshall.
