Thank Evans for Ryan as Colts snatch draw
A last gasp header deep into injury time by super sub Ryan Evans earned Devonshire Colts a hard fought 3-3 draw against Jamaica at the National Sports Centre yesterday.
Playing before a crowd of 1,500 in blustery wet conditions, Colts put on a gritty display which saw them twice come from behind to grab a share of the spoils when it looked as though the visitors were heading for a second successive win following their 2-1 Boxing Day victory over North Village.
"I am very happy with the result today. It was important for Bermuda that we got a positive result in some regards," said the normally silent Colts coach Ray Jones.
"It's unfortunate that we didn't win. I thought that the third goal that they got was kind of soft. Our 'keeper seemed to have lost his footing. All three of our goals I felt we earned and basically that's what we have been trying to instil in this team all season long."
Jamaica stunned the Colts with two goals in 60 seconds in the first-half.
First Colts 'keeper Cymande Davis, who made a series of excellent saves to keep his team in the match, was unable to deny Richard Dean heading home Fabian Dawkins' inswinging cross from the left.
Then hardly before the Jamaican celebrations had subsided, the menacing Wolry Wolfe rifled home a close-range shot to put his team 2-0 up.
With forwards Leon Strickland, Dean, Dawkins and Wolfe exposing the Colts defence with some forceful, penetrating runs down either flank, it began to look as though the home team were in for a drubbing.
Jamaica continued to use the wind to the fullest and should have added to their tally when Wayne Ellis had a wicked blast from ten yards deflected for a corner. From the resulting corner kick Colts scrambled the ball off the goalline.
Dean then watched as his shot from the edge of the 18 yard box whistled past the upright, while Jamaican captain Omar Daley had a 25 yard sizzler parried away by the agile Davis.
Dawkins' close range lob then drifted over an empty net and the visitors also had an appeal for a penalty ignored - referee Anthony Mouchette, just like old man Johnny Barnes at the foot of Crow Lane, waving play on.
Jamaica's inability to fully capitalise on their dominance came to haunt them when 'keeper Richard McCallum made a costly error in the 37th minute which allowed Colts back into the game.
Failing to cleanly collect a high pass down the middle, the lanky goalie spilled the ball to the ever-lurking Aljame Zuill who made no mistake from close range.
The goal seemed to finally spark life into Colts' attack and striker Lloyd Holder came close with a near post header.
Jamaica, somewhat stunned by their opponents' resurgence, replied with Wolfe rattling the upright with a blast from 12 yards.
Leading 2-1 at the break Jamaica picked up where they had left off at the start of the second half - an off-balance Damian Williams shooting just over the bar from the edge of the 18 yard box.
Davis then made a spectacular one-handed grasp to again deny the Jamaicans.
But just as they had done in the first half, Colts equalised against the run of play through Holder who capitalised on a cheeky Zuill through ball down the middle.
Doing well to maintain his composure, he calmly stroked the ball into McCallum's far corner.
This goal, coupled with the increasing rain, seemed to stifle Jamaica's play.
Colts continued to press and the decision to bring on guest player and former livewire Marvin Belboda had an immediate impact on the match as he embarked on some forceful runs dribbling down the right-flank.
But he probably wished that he had worn harder studs when he lost his footing with only a defender and the 'keeper to contend with.
Jamaica then had the misfortune of losing second-half sub Weston Forrest to a hard challenge and also had Ellis booked for rough play, while Colts endured bad luck of their own when both Hollis and Jermel Smith limped off injured.
All Colts' hard work seemed for nought minutes later when Jamaican substitute Christopher Nicholas gave the visiting team a 3-2 lead two minutes from time.
But Colts found their very own super sub in Evans who rose majestically at the near post to head home a Marvin Belboda corner and restore pride back in the local camp.
