Third time lucky for lone pro Perozzi
At last Teresa Perozzi, the Island?s only pro boxer, has been given the thumbs-up to fight in Bermuda.
Twice she peaked for bouts, but twice she was denied the opportunity at the last minute. But come Saturday the 30-year-old will finally get chance to show the country what she is capable of.
Although her opponent remains, as yet, unknown, Perozzi has been told she is ?100 percent on? to let her fists fly at BAA as part of the undercard for the televised David Defiagbon-Ron Guerrero heavyweight contest.
She is destined to take on one of five New York-based opponents in her first pro fight since her Las Vegas debut back in December, 2002.
?I am so pleased that I am going to get to fight here ? at last,? said Perozzi, who is training six to eight rounds a night, four times a week with a selection of male sparring partners.
?I have had five weeks notice and I am feeling in great shape. I needed to lose ten pounds, and have about two to go, but am feeling good and I just can?t wait to get on with it now.?
Perozzi had been due to take on Trinidadian Schroller Carrington in December at the Ruth Seaton James Centre but that bout spectacularly fell through and she missed out on Fight Night due to the prohibitive costs of mixing amateur with pro boxing that night at Number One Shed.
But this time she is good to go ? and knows that the crowd are expecting a big performance.
?Everyone is always asking me when I am going to be fighting here, there is a lot of expectation,? said Perozzi, trained by former world number five middleweight Troy Darrell.
?But I?m tired of all the talking, I just want to be able to back it up in the ring.
?I must admit I am a little bit nervous about fighting here. I have always gone into fights as the underdog, the unknown, but here I will have everyone behind me and I feel I have to perform ? but I can handle that.?
She added that she expected a big crowd to come down to BAA due both to the interest in her first bout here and also the high standard of the other boxing on show.
Promoted by New York City-based promoter Joe DeGuardia, former Canadian Olympian David Defiagbon will go toe to toe against Guerrero for the vacant WBC (World Boxing Council) Continental Heavyweight Championship in an event dubbed ?The Punchout in Paradise?.
Brooklyn-based boxer Vinny Maddalone (20-1, 14 KO?s) will also take on veteran contender Joe Lenart in another heavyweight bout.
Middleweight Tim O?Neil (6-1) will also appear on the night?s card, though an opponent has yet to be ?contracted? to fight against the New York resident.
In the other female fight on the night, Anne Marie Saccaurato will take on Yolanda Blockmere.
The event will be televised on both Madison Square Garden and Time Warner networks.
