Thompson tops big field to lift time trial title
Living up to his reputation as the powerhouse of local cycling, Garth Thompson destroyed a large field of riders in the National Time Trial Championships on Sunday to add to his Mountain Bike Championship won at the end of last year.
Completing the seven-lap challenging course at Southside, St. David?s, in windy conditions and exiting the start ramp as one of the final riders, the 6-ft 3-in Canadian powered past many of the 64 riders who set off ahead of him at one minute intervals to record a winning time of 52 minutes, 38.52 seconds.
Wayne Scott, who came agonisingly close to winning his second Sinclair Packwood Memorial Road Race last month before experiencing mechanical problems at the finish, showed excellent form, placing second in 53:17.08 with top triathlete Evan Naude rounding out the top three in 54:45.02.

In the 15-16 category, Ricky Sousa jr was in a class of his own, securing sixth overall in 57:33.7, beating out Thomas Godfrey (61:41.21) with Mark Smith third in 63:12.21.
First female overall, making her first appearance after a break following the Commonwealth Games, and winning the veterans? category was Julia Hawley in a time of 60:30.63. Midge Oliver placed second in 78:58.39
Deanna Thomson was an impressive winner in the women?s Open category, finishing in 61:18.02 with her sister, Kim McMullen, second in 65:42.1, just edging out Ashley Robinson (65:46.59).
On the four-lap course, Alex Godfrey beat out Tyree Armstrong and Zamari Outerbridge in the 13-14 year category. Gretchin Conyers was first and Sophie Adams second in the girls? 13-14.
David Lunn finished first in the boys? 11-12 category over three laps with Mark Godfrey and Nathan Amaral taking second and third. Jazmine Outerbridge won the girls? group with Katie Ewles second.
