Three teams vying for tenth FA Cup crown

North Village celebrate winning the 2006 FA Cup. Village are gunning to defend the title -- and are one of three teams vying to become the first club to win ten FA Cups

Somerset Trojans, PHC Zebras and North Village ? all clubs vying to become the first to win ten FA Cups ? were all kept apart during yesterday?s quarter-final draw for the prestigious competition held at the Captain?s Lounge.

Trojans were drawn against Devonshire Cougars, Zebras against Boulevard and Village with First Division St.George?s Colts.

Trojans were the first team to win local football?s second biggest prize on nine occasions after defeating Dandy Town 2-0 in 1989-90. But perennial rivals Zebras drew level with them two years later after defeating Town 2-1 in the 1991-92 final.

?It would be nice to be the first team to reach ten,? commented Somerset Cricket Club football chairman Joseff Gooden at yesterday?s draw.

?We haven?t won the FA Cup in 16 years, and so it would be nice to win it again. But at the moment we are just focusing on one game at a time.?

The last time both Trojans and Zebras triumphed in the competition, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last season, Village only had four FA Cup titles to their credit.

But five FA Cup titles over the past seven seasons have enabled the Reds to make up considerable ground and tie rivals Somerset and PHC. Village are also gunning to become the first club since Trojans to win three straight FA Cup titles ? Somerset achieving the feat between 1967-68 and 1969-70.

On paper Trojans and Boulevard face tough quarter-final ties while Village, at least on current form, look set to make their third straight appearance in the FA Cup semis ? and seventh in eight years.

Trojans will do battle with Cougars at Somerset Cricket Club ? a venue the latter team seem to thrive at in cup ties ? Zebras travel to BAA Field to meet Blazers while Village are at home to St.George?s Colts who produced the competition?s first upset last Tuesday night by claiming the Premier Division scalp of Paget Lions.

Incidentally, the last time St.George?s reached the latter stages of the FA Cup competition they faced off against eventual champions Village at Bernard Park in 2001-02 semi-final.

St.George?s sports chairman Kenny Foggo, fired up from Tuesday?s inspiring win over Lions, is confident his team will avenge that loss on March 18. ?We?ve got an easy draw. We don?t even have to train for that game. The only thing we have to play is for the community,? Foggo declared.

Yesterday?s draw saw Prospect United pitted against four-time FA champions and tenants Devonshire Colts which essentially guarantees that one First Division club will advance to the final four of this year?s competition.

In 2002-03 Prospect became the first First Division side to appear in an FA Cup Final in the new millennium, losing to Village 5-1.

Colts are currently on course to clinch the First Division League and Shield double, and possibly an unprecedented triple.

?I think the draw definitely increases our chances as we get to play on a field we are familiar with against a team we are used to competing with and have beaten,? stated Colts and senior BFA executive Lee Holder at yesterday?s draw.

Meanwhile, Lobster Pot were drawn against Key West Rangers and Robin Hood against North Village Rams in yesterday?s Commercial Division Knockout Cup semi-final draw.
