Mother Nature appears to favour neither Western Stars nor Southampton Rangers as for the second time this season rain brought a premature end to proceedings yesterday.

When play in this Premier Division clash was halted at 3.55 p.m., Southampton were comfortably placed on 205 for six with Janeiro Tucker unbeaten on 127 and Kenny Phillips one not out.

Earlier, after the dismissal of opener Keith Wainwright - caught and bowled by Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock for 21 - the home team began to find the going tough as veteran Arnold Manders (three for 33) had their top order in a spin. Rangers slumped from 38 for one to 80 for five..

Skipper Tucker and cousin Kwame Tucker came together and managed a 24-run partnership before Manders had the latter bowled for three.

This brought Rangers player/coach Clevie Wade to the middle and together with his skipper, he put on a valuable 75 runs.

Wade was brilliantly caught behind by young Jekon Edness for 14, giving Wilbur Burt a much deserved wicket.

But from here on it was all Tucker as he took matters into his own hands, dispatching the ball to all corners of the ground en route to his first century of the season.

Tucker, however, was fortunate not to be dismissed after Maurice Lowe failed to hold onto a difficult chance at deep mid-wicket when he was on 86. Tucker blasted 11 fours and 10 sixes.

Somerset 185-4

Bailey's Bay did not bat

Match abandoned

An opening partnership of 113 for Somerset was the highlight of an otherwise frustrating afternoon at Sea Breeze Oval as this Premier match also fell victim to the weather.

Sheridan Ming and Tony Cheeseman hit 55 and 65 respectively to give their side a solid platform for a significant total before grey skies opened up and halted play at 2.47 p.m. The match was officially called off at 5.15 p.m.

Before that, however, Cheeseman was first out, bowled by Corey Hill. Seven runs later, number three batsman Dwayne Basden was also back in the pavilion, leg before to Hill for a duck.

Cheeseman was joined by Wendell White and the two pushed the score to 143 before Cheeseman was caught by Burton Outerbridge off his cousin Jermaine Outerbridge. White also succumbed to the latter bowler for 32.

Somerset were 185 for four off 37.3 overs when the game was called off. Davone Wade was eight not out and Curtis Jackson was yet to get off the mark.

Hill and Jermaine Outerbridge were the pick of the Bailey's Bay attack, taking two for 39 off nine overs and two for 43 off 5.3 overs respectively. There were 25 extras.

Flatts 113-6

St. George's did not bat

Match abandoned

The players waited around for almost three hours for a possible restart before this match at Wellington Oval also became a weather casualty.

St. George's, desperate to end a run of four league and cup losses, had Flatts struggling at 113-6 after 36 overs before the rain sent the teams off the field at 2.50 p.m.

Number four bat Philip Burgess was high man for Flatts with 26 while James Celestine scored 24. The pair added 36 for the fourth wicket after the visitors were in early trouble at 19-3. Burgess and Derek Wright (15) put on a further 33 for the fifth wicket as Flatts started to rebuild their innings. Lloyd Fray (7) and Rahji Edness (12) put on 20 for the unbroken seventh wicket when the skies opened up.

Herbie Bascome led the St. George's bowling with three for 25 off 10 overs while Eugene Foggo had eight tidy overs to claim two for 18. Gregg Foggo got the other wicket, finishing with one for 38 from his allotted 10 overs.

FIRST DIVISION

Willow Cuts 156-3

Somerset Bridge did not bat

Match abandoned

Cuts were well placed poised at 156 for three with Dexter Basden (39) and Steven Mendes (43) getting among the runs before rain halted play. Reggie Tucker (32 not out) and Craig Brangman (11 not out) were at the crease when the heavens opened. Dean Stevens, Taucoma Robinson and Mark Bean all grabbed a wicket apiece for Bridge.

Warwick 241-4

YMSC did not bat

Match abandoned

Warwick saw their hopes of replacing PHC at the top of the First Division washed away yesterday. They were on 241 for four when the bad weather prevented any further play.

For the second week in succession, Daniel Caines led Warwick's batting with 76 while M.Hamid contributed a fine 62 and Dion Stovell 44.
